Show Pessimistic. If ever a State were controlled by those who recognize "influences" which make against progress and liberty, Utah is that State. If ever a city were controlled by an obnoxious force into which religion and wealth enter as equal factors, Salt Lake is that city. These utterances have no reference whatever to the closing of saloons on Sunday nor to the estoppel of gambling. Whatever What-ever may be said of the wisdom of suspending the sale of liquor for a few hours each week, no one entitled to credit for sanity dare assert that there exists, either in morals or economics, the remotest warrant for the toleration of gambling; but, as I have had occasion to say before, both the Sunday selling of liquor and the violation of the anti-gambling law will be openly tolerated shortly, after the coming election is over. Lord, Lord, what fools these mortals be! I have specially in mind conditions existing in this city. Between the dominant church and capitalistic cap-italistic corporations, no city is farther from being controlled in behalf of its citizens. One Councilman Council-man recently entered complaint against the electric elec-tric light monopoly here for violation of the smoke ordinance. Day after day that monopoly has filled the heavens above Salt Lake with darkening darken-ing clouds of smoke and soot, in palpable contravention con-travention of a plain city law which declares that such a condition may not be tolerated. In the business portion of the city the heavens pour down soot, the sky is overcast with smoke and houses are filled and goods are covered with the unconsumed vomitings of MliiraHSHHBBBVH of a corporation which MllHiHBHBBBBBBB ferance, yet which, In 0pttlflNBsHBBslssssi ings, and the plainest a&& 1HHbBBBBBB cnce to a plain law. Let me befPplidt The electric light monopoly in this city to controlled by the authorities of the Mormon church, backed by English capital. So say the disciples of the "brethren," and so will say the court's officers, who have been, or who hope to be, elected by the disciples of the "brethren." By the same token, when one of the "unan-ointed" "unan-ointed" declares that the conditions of the contract con-tract with the English electric light monopoly are not being fulfilled, and that not only the city a a corporation, but citizens individually, are being robbed in the interest of English capital, then the "brethren" who are in control of the light monopoly mo-nopoly backed by English money declare the statements a fabrication, and that there is light and enough; them lo! all the disciples of the "brethren" find their vision strengthened and, behold, be-hold, "there is light" and enough; and so will say the officers of the court elected by the disciples of the "brethren," or who are playing to be elected by the disciples of the "brethren." I ask, in all candor, for a single instance in which the interests of the people at large have been backed by the "brethren" against the aggressions ag-gressions of capital. What the remote past may hold, I am not here to say; but since we became "even as the world," point out a single case to which the interests of the masses have been conserved con-served or backed by the leaders of the dominant church against the exactions of either Mormon or Gentile capital, and I shall oease existence BBBjflWMHHBBBfell! n - HHHHHHHHHotov bf contesta be-BBBBHMJBilMii1" be-BBBBHMJBilMii1" these Jhave BHBHIKIKl8trlbution- WUBBH&BB&BKW$ iTe Pioneer HHfHHHHHMpf" the name of T.
