Show ENLIGHTENED CITY GOVERNMENT. The determination of tho Mormon church to rule in all things here in Utah, in all temporal matters; in political, business and as far as possible, possi-ble, in social affairs, has never been relaxed. There are certain members of the present city council who have kept the city m a turmoil for years by their clashings with the Mayor in many things, especially In the handling of the police force. The Chief of Police recently resigned and it was a week ago, expected that the Mayor would nominate a certain man to succeed him. The News, tne organ of the Church, promptly declared that his nomination would be rejected. This wa3 in fact a notice served upon the Mormon wing in the Council -to "light his confirmation, that they j f jfl must turn the nomination down. Everybody con- jj jH versant with the matter understood in a second all J jB about it. The -man would, if appointed, be a real - l chief, and would not consult with anyone how to u jjH run his office, and that would not do. ',-j fH There is one man in the Council, the great ll H obstructionist, who was a member of the preced- 1 , H Ing council. In that he made himself notorious , H through his combined obstinacy and" stupidity. i ''H He never had charge of any business that re- j quired any broad business ideas to conduct It, 'H and he never acquired any. By his determina- t ' M tion to thwart every effort in tho city's behalf )M made by the former city engineer, he and his asso- I H elates ox the same school, permitted most valua- I . H ble rights of the city in the Utah lake water sup- , 11 ply to lapse. Ho was a brake on progress and a j iH dog in the manger, all through his term. But his " appreviative constituency triumphantly re-elected jj fH him. There was no reason for such re-election, I1 ' except the man's stupidity and cussedness and j H the certainty that under all conditions he would ' I flH obey counsel. iH Well, the most important local question which 1 'H this city is concerned in, is its water supply. A t' j , plan, proposed after much patient study and en- dorsed by a preponderance of the property values j M of the city, was finally crystalized Into a bill and M Introduced into the Legislature. This obstruction- i H 1st in the council was the first to take exceptions M and his first objection was that the bill did not M pay proper respect to the City Council. M The News took it up and delivered a three- M column paragraph upon it last Saturday evening, H winding up by insisting that the City Council was I M the proper body to handle the matter. And this i I fH after the incapacity of that body to handle the , fvl question has during the past three years been over 11 and over and over again demonstrated. WJM It looks now as though this city would get a fl full water supply just about the time that it gets JLH rid of smallpox, thanks to the warfare of the News ' iJ on the only scientific method known to man, to i stamp it out. iH |
