Show WHY THE EPIDEMIC? The Deseret News tells us that "there seems to be an epidemic of anti-Mormon rabies which extends ex-tends throughout the country and runs over into Europe." Well, why do not the chiefs of the Mormon organization stop doing what is sure to bring on these excitements periodically? There was no trouble for two years after statehood was given to Utah, was there? So long as those chiefs j kept their word, there was no complaint, was H there? If a Gentile were to force himself into a H quorum of the Apostles when they were consj. H erlng the business interests of their Kingdom, hQ H would be fired out, would he not? It woultf noj H matter if he held a certificate from all his neigh. I bors that they desired him to have a seat and B take part in the business of the quorum, he would B have to go. But the business of the United B States Senate is the public business of this Hepub- B lie, and Apostle Smoot insists that because his' B neighbors have expressed a desire that he Bhall B sit in that body and take part in what goes on, B he ought to have the place. And this is what has B caused "the epidemic" which the News deplores B The way to stop an epidemic Is to find out and B eliminate the cause. The cause of this epidemic B is twofold. One is the ambition of Apostle Smoot, I the other is the determination to crowd his for I eign ideas of government into the Government of I the United States. That has been the bane of the I Mormon system ever since Joseph Smith had him- I self proclaimed Lieutenant-General, lalsed I tne nucleus of an army and put over them I a flag other than the flag of the United States. It I has made trouble for the saints for more than I sixty years; it will make them trouble for all fu I ture time unless they change their determination I to stealthily undermine the Government of the fl United States and turn the country over to the fl ancient Asiatic rule under which prie3ts fl in the name of the Lord, robbed the people until I national decay and disintegration succeeded. fl It is useless for the News to tell of the good I traits and blameless lives of the Mormon people I That question does not happen to be under tie- fl bate. But there is a question which the News fl might expatiate upon, Why should a trusting peo fl pie like the rank and file of the Saints be kept in fl a perpetual state of excitement and unrest by the I deviltry and broken faith of those who claim a dl B vine right to rule them? fl The News might publish something interest- I ing on that theme if it but tried to. The first fl thing would be an explanation of why the high fl priests are up to their necks in politics after they fl promised to keep out. The second Is why they fl are counseling the people whom to nominate I and how to vote after having published to the I world that henceforth the people shall be abso- I lutely politically free. I There are plenty of other points and it is not I Gentiles alone who are interested; the Mormon I people themselves are asking why their church I cannot be run on the square, and why those they I set apart and consecrated to be their guides, can I not keep their plighted faith with the government I and people of this Republic and with their cnH I slaves in Utah.
