Show Leaders of the American party have all the time maintained that the formation of that society so-ciety would in no way hurt the Republican electoral elec-toral ticket The fallacy of this is effectually ehown by the returns from almost all the city districts where the Americans showed appreciable strength. In the Twelfth district, for instance, where 136 Americans voted, 108 did not vote for judges, 8G failed to vote for district attorney, and 23 refrained from voting for the electors. In other districts the proportion of those who did not vote the electoral ticket is much higher. This is just what the opponents of the formation of an American or any other independent party in a presidential year, had contpndpd In a close election it is quite apparent what the effect might have been on the Republican electoral and judicial judi-cial tickets. |
