Show Utah National Guard Will Help With Work Projects ESCALANTE District Forest For-est Ranger Kevin Schulkoski with the Escalante Ranger District of the Dixie National Forest has announced an-nounced a partnership on a number of work projects with the Utah National Na-tional Guard. Schulkoski said the Escalante Ranger District intended to utilize the services of the Utah National Guard during the summer of 1998. Through this partnership, a number of projects which have already had NEPA decisions completed will be implemented. "The work being accomplished here includes projects that might not get done without the input of this Guard unit," emphasized Schulkoski. "This in no way takes away from local contractors or workers but merely stretches the limited dollars available by utilizing utiliz-ing the manpower and equipment of the Guard." These projects include work on the access road to Barker Reservoir as well as campground development actions, implementation of the travel management decision in the Roundy area, sediment control actions ac-tions near Sand Creek, and routine road maintenance, road surfacing projects, and fence projects. Companion with the work will be camping on National Forest System land, training exercises, military maneuvers and equipment storage areas. It is expected the changes will take place around June 1, 1998 and will continue for about two weeks. According to Schulkoski about 380 people will be involved with this work. The campsites and military mili-tary training sites have been pur posefully located within areas which have been disturbed. Generally, Gener-ally, these areas are within old "chained" areas along Whites Flat Road and Pine Creek Road. The battalion will be self-contained. self-contained. Their support needs will include showerwashroom facilities, trash collection and hauling, portable port-able toilets, and portable mess halls. Biodegradable soap will be used, and gray water (shower water) will be used for dust control on roads, or be discharges into the ground. Any gray water discharge will be a least 12 mile away from campgrounds, running streams, or water sources. Trash will be removed daily and deposited in an approved landfill. Self-contained toilets will be required re-quired with waste removed as needed and disposed of at an approved dump site. Food will be stored to avoid any humanbear confrontations. confronta-tions. Any materials associated with military maneuvers, such as wire or shell casings, will be removed. re-moved. One temporary road, for a distance dis-tance of about 14 mile, will be opened to access a chained area to facilitate training exercises.
