Show COUNTY AGENT NOTES By Harold Lindsay What is wrong with my tomato plants? My tomato plants are dying. What can I do for them? These are the reports that I have received from many of the folks the past week, especially from Escalante. It's Just too bad to see all of those tomato plants dying after folks have gone to the work and expense to get them as large as they are. For your information this is a disease called 'Curly Top' which is a virus caused disease carried by the beet leaf-hopper. These are the small insects that jump when you scare them from the plants. The leafhoppers live through the winter on the desert in the weeds. They will move great distances to cultivated plants where they feed on the healthy plants. They carry the virus which caused this disease. It is impossible to spray or dust before they do the damage. The virus can only be carried by the insect from one plant to another. The bad part of it all is that you can't do anything about it once the plants have the disease. Plant pathologists are working on the problem as well as plant breeders to develop varieties that are resistant to tho disease. It will affect spinach, beets, cucumbers, squash, and petunias as well as the tomatoes. If the green stink bug gets too numerous folks may have to spray the grain to prevent serious damage. Best results have been obtained by using lVi pints of Deildrm per acre. The damage they do is to suck the milk out of the grain plant while it is filling. I found a heavy infestation of grain aphid on George Hamilton's barley In Escalante the other day. There seems to be no alarm because the lady bugs have come to the rescue and are eating them up in great numbers. We have a few, beneficial insects after all. We should plan on a campaign this fall to get rid of the sparrows. I get reports that they are taking the small cherry crop. Have you tried tying the family cat in the cherry tree? I didn't say it would work but people try all kinds of things. Thanks From Band Mothers The Panguitch Band Mothers wish to thank and express their appreciation to Janice Tebbs.
