On May 4th the Garfield Substance Abuse Coalition will be hosting Community Family Night and will be at the High School. It will start at 6 pm and is free. Vickie Talbot a VISTA worker has volunteered to take on the BEAR project (Business Expansion and Retention). This project comes from the governor's office and is partnered with SUU and Small Business Development Center in Cedar City. She will be interviewing all the business in Garfield Co. to help with growth and expansions. Got a nice tour of the Gem Theater, they are opening at the end of May, the 28th I think. Their sign that was recently installed is the original that they restored. Boy have they done a great job with this old eye sore. We got a sample of their home made ice cream, all as I can say is wow, it's the best ice cream I've ever tasted. They plan on having a large selection of ice cream, including sherbet and sorbets, my favorite. The inside of the theater is a museum, with a balcony and a movie screen that can be raised so plays or entertainment can be put on. What a great addition to our Main St. Cedar Dermatology will be here at the Garfield Memorial Hospital on the first Thursday of every month. This badly needed service has Dr. Ben Adams and Dr. Rand Colbert on staff. So you won't have to go over to Cedar anymore, please call for an appointment, (676-8811) By the 2nd week in May, The Quilt Walk Committee will take the bricks to Cedar to have them engraved. The response has been great. Thank you, If you are interested it is $100.00 and the brick will be placed in the park. Sunday was Easter and with it comes the promise of everlasting life. Saturday morning was the Easter Egg Hunt at the County Fair Grounds. It started at 10:00 am and the Easter Bunny was there with a lot of prizes. After the Hunt there was the annual car show at Hurricane. Most years Pat and I go down there for the show and we drive through Zions Park on the way and we finish off the day with dinner in St. George. This trip usually jump starts our spring and hopefully it will do it again this year, I think enough is enough of all this white stuff. This is the weekend that will be the closing of Brian Head ski season. I have been told that this was one of the best seasons for packed power ever and there is still 7' of snow left. So dust off the skis and head on up the hill, I promise that you won't have to At PHS last week it was the Drama Club time to strut their stuff at State, that was held over in Parowan. On Thursday night the stu- dents took in a musical at the Parowan Show house, it was Into the Woods, that Panguitch had performed, three or four years ago. This is a fun play house and when I hear of something going on there, I'll let you know. On Friday morning the Drama Team performed a one act play called "Ten Actors Search for a Cell Phone". The cast of the play was: Brandy- Breanne Bateman, Stage ManagerJaylen Dodds, Katie-Jamie Cooper, Kevin-Austin Josie, Tony-Brendan Lee, Christene-Abby Barrett, Nicki-Cassidy Fehr, TreyTyler Brinkerhoff, ToniCassidy Josie, and Pizza Boy-Locke Savage. The Team received an Excellent ranking for the play. On Saturday the Team performed in individual events in front of three Judges. These are the Results: PANTOMIME Lauren Frandsen & Jaclyn Gillett, A day at the Park -2 Excellents and one Superior. Abby Barrett & Cassidy Fehr, Epic Fail. 2 Superiors & 1 Superior. Panguitch was also awarded a plaque for the most friendly team at the festival. With two Gold Medals in Drama Breanne Bateman added to her collection of All State Awards. Last year she was All State in Track (javelin) Golf, and this year in Volleyball and Basketball. Last Saturday Tammy Barton completed another EMT class, with 16 graduates. My figures have Tammy bringing to Garfield County their 10th class that she has taught. All of Tammy's students are well trained or they don't graduate. Garfield County has all the latest medical equipment that is available, thanks to Tammy. The following are the new Panguitch EMTs: Bronson Barton, Kelsie Barton, Andy Black, Cindy Breinholt, Nate Hatch, AJ Johnson, Mike Johnson, and Justin Peterson. Boulder has two new EMTS, Escalante one, and Bryce Valley ended up with four. Last week I wrote about Teah Caine's One Day, One Dollar , One Cure fund raiser for diabetes. In one day counting some sponsors money her group raised close to $3,000 dollars. She was happier with all the in- formation on diabetes that they were able to hand out. With the 7th and 8th grade girls basketball tournament last Saturday in town, and with down time between games, many of the parents went shopping down town. Melissa Veater new shop "Forget Me Not" did a big day, with selling much of her inventory. We have another new business in town, that was badly needed, Color County Carpet. The Beckstead family has opened up the small store across from Joe's Market and has a lot of carpet to select from. Did you notice the great new "Gem Theater" sign? With gas prices on the rise big time, it could have some effect on the tourist business this next summer. That earthquake in Japan probably won't help matters either. However again the EURO and the Pound have gained strength and we should see a lot of Europeans coming to take advantage of our cheap rates. On Friday I was talking to a person from SLC, who was on his way to Bryce Canyon. He had lived his whole life in SLC and had never been to the Canyons in So. Utah. I have met many people over the years that are just like him; maybe we should be pushing our Canyons in the SLC area, with the high cost of fuel they could make it here on one tank. We have some of the finest scenery in the world and it is only one tank of gas away. Well it's the NBA second season and in only the second day there has been some big upsets. Chicago barely beating Indiana, Boston winning by two and Miami having to come from behind to win started the season and then the Lakers, San Antonio and Orlando all losing their first games; we could be in for some great ball games. See you next week in the funny papers. Mack 0. 435-231-1546 REAL ESTATE CEDAR CITY Henrieville -300+ acres on Hi-way 12 frontage, agricultural, development possiblities. For the last three years the Scenic Byway 12 Committee has used the funding to provide a bicycle safety program and new bicycle helmets for elementary school students in Garfield and Wayne Counties. This year the Byway Committee has passed the HalfMarathon donation of $2,500 to the town of Cannonville to help fund the completion of their Town Park improvements including an outdoor kitchen and restroom facilities. A check and letter of appreciation were presented to Mayor Jeff Stock in the April 19th Scenic Byway Committee meeting held in Tropic. The Half-Marathon and 5K run is held each July and now hosts 1,500 runners. The finish line for both races is at the Cannonville Town Park where as many as 2,500 runners, spectators and volunteers converge on the morning of the Half-Marathon and 5K races. The Scenic Byway 12 Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organized for educational and charitable purposes benefitting travelers and communities on Highway 12. STOLEN ITEMS IN PANGUITCH My storage unit in Panguitch was broken into sometime in the last couple of weeks. Everything is gone. Missing are household items, Christmas decorations, Sears rolling tool chest and collectables. Most dear to me were my husband's ashes, the American flag from my father's casket and family pictures. Reward for info, no questions asked. Call 310-5035914 and leave a message.. Thank you for your help. In fifteen years there has only been two times when its wasn't snowing or the wind wasn't blowing. On Friday at noon, Pat got a call from Sheriff Perkins, informing her of the danger of the creek that running by the Fair Ground. So the Hunt was moved to the High School Running Track. Pat woke up to snow/rain on Saturday morning and the wonderful thing about living in Panguitch, she was able to move into the gym. The hunt came off very well, thanks to all the help. Many thanks to the Panguitch Lions and the City for their donations that makes this fun event possible. Thanks to the girls out at Silverado Ranch and to FCCLA girls, for your help and to all of you that put your change in the bottles. Many thanks to Leland's Chevron for supplying breakfast for all the help. With all of the water running in the creek, if you go to the City Park with your kids please don't let them out of your sight that water is really moving fast. The Sevier river is running at maximum and is about to run over its banks, they are letting as much water out as possible from the dam and the lake isn't going down any. And we aren't even into spring run off yet. Saturday afternoon we went down through Zions Park on our way to the Car Show in Hurricane. The Acey creek running from above Hatch is already running over it banks and is adding to the water in the Sevier. Zions Park for some reason had a free weekend, which doesn't make any sense, because it is the busiest weekend of the year. There wasn't any parking anywhere clear down to Springdale. Even the Virgin River was running at full capacity, and the Park is beautiful. They are building a new addition to Hurricane's High School and the car show was moved a block away, but it didn't take anything away from the show. So many cars to drool over, I tried to get one of the owners to adopt me and leave me their car in their will, but no such luck. A lot of things going on this next week. A Renewable Energy Fair today is being held out in Milford on the 28th. Cedar City Lions Club is holding a Kite Festival at the Cedar Middle School Lawn on Saturday the 30th. It will start at 10am and the proceeds to go to the Iron Co. PTA/ PTO and the vision centered projects of the Lions Club. So get your kites and head over their, the kites that will be there are really something. For the Seniors: On May 3 at 11:15am at the Senior Citizens Center, Relay Utah's hearing assistive telephone services and equipment distribution program, will be there. This presentation will explain the telecommunication services and phones that are available to seniors, at no charge through this statefunded program.
