Show OCTOBER 12,2006 PROPOSED FEE INCREASES FOR BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK Bryce Canyon National Park is proposing to increase entrance fees in 2007. The increased revenues would pay for expenses related to transportation and the operation of the shuttle bus system. The shoulder seasons (spring and« fall) are becoming busier each year, escalating traffic into the park. By increasing funds available for the Transportation System, park management intends to increase the shuttle service. In 2006, the shuttle operated from May 26 through September 10. Statistically, visitation in September is at least as high as the summer months, sometimes higher. The proposal is to extend the shuttle later in the season and operate longer hours on a daily basis. The increase in shuttle service will benefit the visitors by providing a much needed service, saving them from circling parking lots and waiting in lines at the entrance station. By providing the shuttle bus system, the park is encouraging visitors to use alternative transportation, save fuel, increase safety on park roads and help with air quality. The park proposes an increase from our current entrance fees of $20.00 per vehicle to $25.00 per vehicle. The Bryce Canyon Annual Pass would increase from $30.00 to $50.00. The per person fee would increase from $10.00 per person to $12.00 per person. While making presentations at community meetings, town boards and city councils, NPS officials were surprised that many local residents were not aware of the $30.00 Bryce Canyon Annual Pass. Some suggested that the park promote the annuaj pass in the local communities, encouraging the purchase prior to the fee. increase. The Bryce Canyon Annual Pass can be purchased at the park's entrance station. Golden Age and Golden Access Cards will continue to be available. The National Park Pass program is being updated and converted to the America the Beautiful pass program. Information about changes for these national passes will be available soon. It isn't official but from the time it started to rain Thursday, till it stop Friday my rain gauge showed 31/4 in. of rain. A lot of new gullies in the valley now. There were some folks that couldn't get across the Alvey wash to town Friday. There was a flood going through the Bailey wash also. The school bus from Boulder stopped to watch water falls where there had never been water. Some of the descriptions from the kids was pure poetry. In spite of all the rain there was quite a crowd of people come through the Old High School Gym for the Escalante Arts Festival. There were some magnificent art in the building. Different kinds of crafts from jewelry, photographs, hand sewn bags, quilts, loomed rugs, carpentry, homemade jams and jellies. Just too much to remember it all. Besides our own local talent, we had just to name a few Barbara Leach from Panquitch, Melissa Durrett and Terry Home owners of Whispering Stone. Melissa is from Hatch. Saturday turned out to be a very beautiful day for the venders that were to set up outside. A lot of talent and some wonderful food was going on out there. I had my booth set inside a little way from the front door and every once in awhile, a small breeze would pick up the smell of the food and whiff it through the building. Wow was it tantalizing. There were even more people in, town Saturday. Hope everyone that come to look had a good time. "Made ya think" Who was the principal and coach,- and what year did the Escalante boys get admitted to league basketball?
