Soil The National Survey program in Utah is the responsibility of the SCS, but is accomplished through the cooperation of Utah State University and other federal agencies. The soil survey work being done by Robert and David in Millard County is part of the technical assistance furnished to the Millard County Soil Conservation District by the Soil Conservation Service and other cooperating agencies. Robert Fish, a soil scientist for the Soil Conservation Service (SCS), and David Cremeens, a soil scientist employed by Utah State University are providing a valuable service to east Millard Counits residents. ty and These two soil scientists are beginning their second field season in mapping the soils of east Millard County. After obtaining permission from landowners to enter private property, Robert and David auger small holes in the soil and begin examining the soils in reference to texture, structure, chemical comsoil position, depths, slope, stoniness, water holding capacity, erosiveness, and management capabilities. During the next six months David and Robert will be mapping approximately 120,000 acres of rangeland, cropland, and residential land, mostly between Holden and the County line. According to Robert, soil surveys are made for basically two reasons. One. to provide information about each parcel of land to assist farmers and ranchers and all those who work with soils in better managing this basic resource. Two, to fit the soils of each survey into a scientific classification scheme of the soils found in the United SIates In addition to their Juab-Millar- d An accordionist, it has been only one who said, is the can successfully Ljj v X vf x. t . v v - v V The Scipio ley Camp of DUP drove to Salt Lake Friday, April 18, and enjoyed a day of sightseeing.
