Show I 1 WOW for f this paper IN missionary FIELDS HE following is an extract from a letter 1 e ater written by elder albert E schoenfeld now on a mission in dresden germany to his father with Z C M I 1 in this city ity on monday next I 1 will leave dresden for leipzig where there is a nice branch of the church I 1 intend to go and see your birthplace and give my testimony to your sister and you may also expect a little keepsake from the home of your childhood hood I 1 visit occasionally our relatives and bear my testimony to them as long as I 1 remain in those lands on the xyth of august there was a heavy hailstorm in this place the hailstones being as large as walnuts brother cook from munich visited me on his way home to Colora colorado dg he left brother in munich to direct the branch alone brother kretschmar one of the saints in leipzig was here on sunday last he is is a fine man and is blessed with many great testimonies he said he would not rest until king albert of saxony gox got a tract ando and some ofte of our books to read consequently on sunday sanday we went to the royal castle and left a tract with my adar address ess in to be read in that house as the lord may direct brother cook tells me that brother has a large picture of the temple and a 4 schoolteacher schooT teacher in munich a 4 non mn mormon saw it and after he had a apo powerful po w erful testimony given give n him by bythe the brethren concerning the lattier latter day work he borrowed the picture and had a painter jin t er prepare a copy of it for which C he paid 35 marks there I 1 here is a great deg deal of good being done here herein in germany even through showing to to people eople these different dif lerent buildings of our church and then on their own inquiry connecting therewith our testimony of of the everlasting gospel they generally get interested and begin asking all manner of questions pertaining to our city tit and religion the learned men of the world today do not particularly want to listen to a plain simple testimony of the first principles sciples of the gospel so we have to take a e a kind of a roundabout round about way to interest them until we can engage their attention but every time we finally come back to repentance and baptism for the remission ot of sins elder tobler is in borau yet and they th ey are trying tr ying to make it hot for him there but he has his room consequently his residence here in dresden and therefore is in borau only on a visit which they cannot hinder the officers of borau brot to th the officers of dresden about dhoot it and aid a notice was I 1 wf ut at our bm for him to appear at ohead h headquarters alters in dresden I 1 went r t ciol uni in Ms hi absence and edid 1111 t hat he i wai not here h er so yesterday a notice came for me to appear I 1 obeyed the summons and the tol following lowing conversation took place question where is mr tobler answer Tray traveling eling Q Is he traveling in borau A yes sir sir Q when will he come back A I 1 believe in about fourteen days Q he is holding meetings all over that place A I 1 never heard 0 of f that before Q when he comes back notify him that we want to see him you gentlemen have also a petition planted before the in dresden is that the fact A yes sir Q well they certainly can not allow you to hold open meetings A we do not want to hold open meetings Q how have you been holding your meetings then A we have not held any aeeti meetings at all since you gave us to understand we were not to hold any until we get permission Q that is good if you wish to invite your friends to your room on sunday and sing and pray etc we can not stop that but your friends must not bring their friends with them whom you have in cot ot invited for in that case it would constitute in the meaning of the law an open meeting I 1 thanked the officer and went my way rejoicing he had tried to catch me when he asked how we held our meetings had I 1 said in secret how he would have gone gond for me but indeed it is ful fulfilled fille id as it is written in tha hour thour think not what you shall answer for it shall be given unto you and the best of it is that we really obtained a definition of what constitutes an open meeting and also what we are allowed to do without offending the law we actually can have our windows open now during our little sunday meetings and as long on as we do not make any undue noise t the he ponce officer in the street can list listen en if he e wishes to I 1 w was s also asked whether I 1 was here in the interest of the church I 1 told him bim I 1 certainly was and partly also to visit relatives ano and to study the language he re replied lied so and how long do do you u intenT intend to tay stay here I 1 said 4 until antil spring perhaps or longer he said all right i itt I 1 by this you seq see t that at we are theay today a little better off than before really all things must turn in favor of those who are on the lords side we have been using the old place for baptism where apostle F D richards baptized you brother karl G maeser and others thirty nine years ago in 1855 and we shall leave this sacred spot to the remembrance of the saints in this place so long as it pleases the lord for S saints to be here I 1 have also visited ichona on the austrian frontier where you were school teacher in the year 1852 1842 1 I bore my testimony to your old friends and obtained some genealogies I 1 went to that widely known tourist resort zirkle r stein ind and there found your name in inscribed in the travelers record in 1 1852 and 1854 by permission of the old lady keeper now go 90 years old who ho remembers you well I 1 have cut the inscription out and send and itta it ebu abu forit fora family I 1 relic delit 1 she sho showed we the bk beok of mormon and Beo bachler which you sent to her f millennial stow man elder heber C boden president of the liverpool conference writes from preston under date of august 20 20 1894 as follows preston has been awakened by the sound of the gospel as it has not been for many years past early recollections make this place sacred ground to the latter day saints here the gospel was first preached in england in fact here the first foreign mission was established in 1837 when heber C kimball accompanied by willard richards orson alyde yde and others first set foot on english soil many memories luster cluster around this spot spat and no elder v visits preston without viewing vauxhall chapel where these devoted men held their first meeting the day after their arrival here the old cock pit now ruined which for years after was used by them as a meeting place the house in wilfred street where these early elders lived and where owing to the marvelous success that attended their labors in preaching the gospel satan with his hosts sought to hinder the progress of the work of god by attempting to destroy their lives also the old landmark on the banks of the river ribble which marks the place where the first and numerous subsequent baptisms were performed the elders met with much much success in their early labors here sometimes as many as fifteen converts applying for baptism after hearing their first latter day saint sermon the people now however are very different in matters pertaining perta inin to their bif salvation most of them ditl I 1 accept and read our tracts listen to our conversation and sanction nearly all we say yet they make no exertions themselves to obtain further light they are wedded to the idea that nothing whatever is required of them further than to believe and all will be well occasionally we meet with people who are willing to get to the foundation of the gospel and upon that build a structure which will stand against the winds and rains and floods of opposition on sunday august 5 ive we had the pleasure of baptizing five into the church who rejoiced greatly with us in having been admitted through the proper door into the fold of christ several days previous to our conference which was held sunday august 12 the elders numbering ten gathered into preston from their various fields of labor we concluded to hold a number of outdoor out door meetings for the purpose 0 of arousing some interest in our conference which we did in front of the town hall is the historic spot where fifty seven years ago the first open air meeting in in asars england angland was held to this interesting place we repaired in a body to hold some of our meetings we opened our services each time with a spirited hymn with the first note the people began to flock to the scene and at toe the conclusion of our prayer an audience of several hundred had gathered around us eager to hear what we had to say the elders spoke with much freedom and the people were interested in the exposition tion of the principles of the gospel rv and paid the closest attention to show the spirit of the listeners I 1 may say isay that when aa a made to disturb d out our meeting the vt people would permit of no interruption and cried lown down the offenders at the close of one of the meetings we were assailed by an elderly individual who filled with calumny and vituperation sought to destroy the influence and sympathy we had created among the people this however gave us a better opportunity of presenting our doctrines and defending our people as many had questions to ask on which they desired immediate answer by this time we had no more difficulty in gaining listeners so many things were asked and answered con berning us and the principles of the gospel that it was 11 1115 15 p in when we started for home we were surprised at the success of these gatherings and we have seen more immediate results from them than irom from our former meetings in fact they con largely to the success of our conference which was in every respect one of the most enjoyable that I 1 have ever attended an unusual number of strangers were present at the three meetings we held on sunday and the greatest of interest was paid to the sermons of the elders in the evening our hall was too small to hold all who sought admittance the rich flow of the spirit that attended us in our open air meetings continued with us in the conference and aided the speakers in the presentation of the gospel principles this spirit was apparent to us all not omitting the strangers who were in attendance we trust that the interest aroused in preston by these meetings will continue unabated until it shall result in the salvation of many souls elder A J seare scare writes from abingdon england under date of august xo io irom from which we make the following extracts since writing you last the excitement cit ement which then existed has abated the mayor has allowed us to resume our outdoor out door meetings three honest souls have rendered obedience to the gospel and the prospects are that in the near future a few more who are investigating vesti gating will follow one of our new members has been a baptist for years i but he realized he was in the same position as apostle paul found those certain disciples when he came to E ephesus esus acts i 1 6 he acknowledged I 1 e e that although he had bad been b baptized aati d and d was a member of 0 the B baptist apt t hutch church he had never been taught concerning the holy ghost and he had not nol adv advanced aneed in m the knowledge ot of god he had prayed for years that the lord fould would show him the true gospel during the excitement here with our opponent shaylor he came to one of of our meetings at the close he said god bless you brother you have preached the gospel as I 1 have never heard it before I 1 came up here expecting to find some fault but you have preached the truth and I 1 want to hear more of it since brother J D owens release brother H M dinwoodey and I 1 have labored together here and we are having n some very interesting meetings M we e have traded and preached in twenty eight different villages and in many instances the whole of the village has turned out to hear us and we generally dispose ot of all the literature we havo have with us we sometimes hold as many as three out door meetings on a sunday we have hav had the pleasure of sister Dinwoodey ft company the lamon lat month thor or so it being her vacation she with my wife has taken great pleasure in in going out on the streets and helping helpin us our singing which has been afe the of drawing large concourses of people every sunday night As you are aware of sister ability as a vocalist I 1 hardly need tell you that the solos rendered by her were much appreciated precia ted and called forth many compliments ments from the musical fraternity of abingdon and have had the effect of allaying a great deal of prejudice although the ministers in their pulpits are denouncing us on every hand the people still give us great attention and treat us with the greatest respect and turn out by the hundreds to hear us god grant that many may have their eyes opened and that they may ere long see the good results of our labors elder john belliston writes from the mount quorndon Quorn don leicestershire Leicester shire england under date of august 20 1894 as follows elders johnson jefferies Jef fenes and myself are laboring in the villages between leicester and loughboro we distribute the written word and bear our testimonies to all our tracts are received with a combined feeling of indifference and a desire to oblige the giver I 1 was tr trading acting the other day tn barrow on soar when I 1 met with a lady very much troubled over the trinity she was an aged lady and someone who seemed to be very anxious to see her saved bea before ore her departure from this life had told her that if she did not believe in the holy trinity that god and the son and the holy ghost were the same person erson with one body she would go to 0 hell beell this she said she could not bel believe and therefore she was worried our ou r views coincided with what she had gleaned from the scriptures and she was surprised to hear a talk from the scripture as she had been taught that they were such a bad people she called her neighbor in to hear what I 1 had to say and she has opened her house to us at any time we wish to hold meeting ne eting we feel well in our labors and in in presenting to the people in this vicinity the glorious principles which we have come here to promulgate |
