Show I 1 DEATH OF A VETERAN gideon durfee wood son of lydia stevens and 3 jabez wood born in the town of hardwick otsego county N Y june 1808 died september jtb 1890 in spring ville utah while yet a small boy his parents moved from the state of new york to pennsylvania as the part of the state they lived in furnished very scanty means of subsistence they afterwards Js moved further west and settled in what was called the western reserve huron county ohio on dec 28 1830 he was married to miss hannah daley by squire bryant and soon carved out a home in th eforest in february 1832 he was baptized into the church of jesus christ of letter latter day saints by elder orson hydo hyde anti and on april alth following his first son now hon lyman S wood was born in august 1888 1898 lie he with his family and others removed to far west missouri on his arrival he found much ill III feeling existing on the part of the missourians Missour ians against the saints which soon broke out into open violence resulting lesul ting in the expulsion of the saints the following winter when lie he and his family were driven from froin the state slate he afterwards Js settled in big neck adams co illinois where he remained until the fall of 1845 where he fled before a violent persecution to nauvoo in the spring of 1846 he left with the camp of the saints for the blocky mountains stopped at council bluffs bluffis on his way until the spring of 1848 when hp be took his family to salt lake in december 1850 he accompanied george A smith to found a settlement at what is known as parowan carowan Pa rowan iron county and returned next spring to salt lake in the fall ct t 1851 8 1 he went to Spring vile where he bought a farm and other property and early in the spring of 1853 he removed his family thither in 1855 he accompanied orson oraon hyde to form a settlement at what is now cart carton carson on nev he was ordained a high priest nov ath 1861 his wife died april loth 1871 with her he had two sous sons and three dau daughters aters he also married Eliz elizabeth abAh wakefield by whom he be had one son and two daughters in all his associations with the church he remained unwavering to the end and was a staunch supporter of cc operative and other financial institutions connected therewith |
