Show AN OLD SUBJECT REVIVED WE have repeatedly called at to the neglect of people who come here from the old world to write arlt to their friends whom they have left behind wo we recur to the subject because of the receipt odthe of the following letter which brings brines it up again very prominently SHEFFIELD eng sept 2 deserea jear we are requested to make inquiry through your valuable paper as to the welfare and whereabouts of one andrew gregory also john rayner who left in the may company of saints promising to write as soon as they they arrived in utah and as they have not yet heard from themas a natural con consequence consequences they are quite anxious about them any one knowing of them would be conferring a great favor by writing a few lines to the deseret NEWS Orif or if this should meet the eyes of the parties themselves they will please redeem their promise by writing 9 to their friends and thereby greatly oblige their brethren in the gospel J J GOLIGHTLY J T KAY our friends who come from abroad are aware that all kinds of false and acid absurd rumors are spread by designing persons concerning utah and the mormons cormons Mor mons 21 also that the public are very credulous and ready to receive anything of a sensational character in relation to that subject they should therefore be ready to do all that lies in their power to prevent the manufacture of such stories in their case at least and to aid in dis abusing the public mind of the nonsensical ideas that prevail in regard to the situation here even at this late day there are many persons of ordinary intelligence who believe that the mormon an authorities open all the letters posted in utah so that those unfavorable to mormonism may be suppressed and that people are held here in bondage against their will and prevented frona from communicating with their friends abroad these notions we are very ridiculous but they are am entertained all the same and when men and women who have promised to write and give the facts acts as soon as they arrive here fail to keep their pledged word color is given to the stories that have been told and the way of the elders is often hedged up as a consequence and their difficulties and trials are unnecessarily increased we hope the request of elders golightly and kay will be complied with if the gentlemen whose names are given do not respond some information should be sent by others who know of their whereabouts promises should be held held sacred by whomsoever and to whomsoever they may have been made and by writing to people in the towns and villages from which they came our brethren and sisters from the old world will not only redeem their verbal pledges but aid n disseminating the truth by stating facts and correcting the misstatements which have been scattered broad broadcast Last throughout the world |
