The future for a career woman has recently become brighter. With sufficient training, determination and a lot of hard work, a working woman can find herself further ahead than she could a few years back. However, the obstacles confronting and challenging her advancement have not yet been completely overcome and will require patience and changes in longstanding social attitudes. IN RECENT MONTHS we have seen enacted into law much administration- - supported legislation that is breaking the barriers of sex discrimination. The American woman has the opportunity to choose a career whether it be in the home or outside the home. However, the freedom to compete with on an equal basis for financially rewarding and otherwise fulfilling occupations must still be over- Retires Eldon R. Anderson, Facilities Engineering Division, receives a Certificate of Retirement from Col. Arthur J. Kingdom after Mr. Anderson'i 29 yean of Federal Service. Mrs. Solomon has been working as a library technician for the past ten years and enjoys her job tremendously. She feels her job has enriched her understanding concerning come. This month we wish to present Mrs. Hazel Solomon, Technical Library Assistant, GS-- 6. Hazel was born and raised in Burley, Idaho, where she completed her high school education. She began her working career as a telephone operator, then moved to a teller before entering Civil Service. She felt her opportunities for advancement would be greatest with the Federal Government. - id scientific subject matter and has given her the opportunity to be in contact with people of different occupations. Hazel has received Quality Salary Increase and Sustained Superior Performance Awards. THERE ARE several reasons why Hazel was motivated to work. She feels that economic changes existing today make it imperative to work in order to help her family maintain an acceptable economic level She also feels that women today wish to feel needed and useful to society. This may be largely due to the technological advances which have eliminated a lot of the hard housework where some women may feel the need for more creative and challenging responsibilities. A working woman often has to combine family responsibility along with her job. Sometimes she is forced to choose occupations which can be left and with a minimum amount of fuss. As a result, women have barely made a dent in the top professions. HAZEL RELIEVES that it is important to plan your career early. Her advice to women is to study the labor department in general and from this determine what categories of jobs will be more in demand and will outspace ed 20 years' service Arvid O.
