Show JULY 8, 1986 KAYSVILLE Sometimes it takes a ladys touch. The popularity of girls softball within the city limits of Kaysville can be credited mostly to the recent efforts of Marianne Krueger. The Kruegers, residents of the city for the past three years, love the summer sport of softball like none othere. Marianne learned to adore the younger generation playing the sport while living in nearby Layton as she assisted Janet Johnson in organizing and directing girls softball leagues. My motivation to get things going here got a big boost a year ago when we took some Kaysville teams to a Layton tournament. It was embarrassing to say the least, we got killed. There just wasnt any supervision or direction, said Krueger. At first she offered her services for nothing and finally this summer the city recreation department appointed her director. Its interesting that the city started out with two junior high teams and six elementary clubs where now theyve grown to in a Layton league. The girls love the sport and the only thing they needed was some organization. Were now using official ASA fastpitch rules and other things that just make the sport fun, continued Krueger. There is a tremendous interest among the young girls to get out and exercise, compete or whatever, Had we started the registration earlier in ll we may have had six girls teams alone in that league. Girls sports have just never been advertised and now that they are, the girls are really starting to come out. I guess you could say there is an abundance of little girls, like boys, who have nothing to do. Finally we are giving the little girls something more than just soccer to compete in, said Krueger. Other girls sports that may emerge on the scene are volleyball which has surfaced in the past but hasnt had the success Marianne feels it should have. Its amazing with these little girls how if just one decides to get involved, then an entire army director attended The new Layton High School where she was involved in every sport she could. After graduating in 1976 she moved to Minnesota for a short stint before coming back and enrolling at Weber State College. The Kruegers are the parents of three little girls whom someday will probably be involved in recreation sports as well. UAL mrOME THE CALL IN final. One of Kaysville Citys umpires barks out a call during the game between the Chicks and the Pink Panthers. she said. seems to follow, six junior high teams and a whopping eleven elementary teams. Next year we will even have added high school aged teams, Marianne, saying there could be at least four of those teams competing Orbitread All Season Radial 15580R13 16580R13 17580R13 185 1 3 21 575R15 22575R15 23575R15 Wed. 6 P.M. $20.00 22.00 23.00 25.00 26.00 28.00 31.00 32.00 145R13 155R13 165R13 175R14 185R14 17570R13 18570R13 18570R14 TANYA SWIFT IS up at bat during recent girls softball game in Kaysville City.
