Show SEPTEMBER 23, 1986 Hold Weber to 68 total yards Lancer Continued from previous poge poor one which gave Layton possession on Webers 36 yard line. The Lancers simply had no trouble moving the ball at all. Troy Murray passes or William Reid or Richard Lovelace scampers took the ball to the Weber one before Murray went over on a keeper with 6:25 remaining in the first quarter. Murray booted the PAT. Murray, getting just as many rave reviews on his kicking as in his quarterbacking, boomed his first three kickoffs deep into Weoers end zone nullifying any returns. i With Boyd Murray batting down a pass in the next Weber drive and Phelts and Trujillo again applying pressure, Weber was forced to punt again. But the center snapped the ball over the head of the punter and Layton recovered on Webers nine yard line. Layton failed to get six points after the recovery, but Murray did get them a 22 yard field goal with 3:35 left. Again Weber was forced to punt, still searching for their first first down. With Layton in possession on LAYTON QUARTERBACK TONY gives it the Jim McMahon look both on the motorcycle and off of it. His favorite target stands next to him, Chris Parrish. Murray, Parrish give Lancers new dimension By KEITH DUNCAN LAYTON Troy Murray is living in luxury these days. No, he doesnt wear gold rings or chains and doesnt drive a fancy sports car, but he is the most improved and surprising player in all of Region One. Teams just dont know how good he is and therefore he gets the luxury of not getting keyed upon, said Laytons Tom Moore, the Lancer offensive coordinator. Moore is precisely right. The Layton junior is just one of the cogs in the Lancer offense, but one that not too many folks realized was really there when the season began. While opposing defenses have tried to shutdown the running of William Reid and Richard Lovelace, Murray has had the freedom to do his thing. His thing has been to come up with the key pass play when needed, and he's done just that. So far in 1986, his favorite receiver has been another pleasant surprise in Chris Parrish. The Layton senior has given Lancer fans shades of BYU receivers as hes run all over the field to haul down Murray launched passes. Still another target for Murray, is hiw own brother Boyd. The two had never connected on a pass play until the Weber outing. When they decided to do it, they did it big as the two of them gained 60 yards in three plays, the final one being a 24 yard touchdown pass. Theres not a whole lot I can say about Troy, other than to tell . you he is a winner, said Wood, Our hats go off to LAYTON Richard Lovelace! The deceptive, talented Layton High running back may be finished for the 1986 season due to an injury he suffered in the second quarter of Laytons 28-- 7 victory over Weber High last Friday evening. The Layton senior was having something next to a brilliant year before he was pounced upon by three Weber defenders in an unsuc-cessf- two-poi- nt ul conversion attempt. Prior to the injury, Lovelace had rushed for 41 yards, had one touch A winner every time. The Lancer head coach is quite high on his junior quarterback and even he is amazed at some of the things he does at times. One of the amazing things is his kicking ability. Murray has shocked lots of folks with his kicking eVenings, beginning Oct. 6. Matches will start at 6 at the Layton Armory, 36 Golden Ave. Registration fee is $100 per team. The punt was another poor one and with a 15 yard penalty, Layton started first and 10 at the throughout most of the second half. But even with that period of grogginess, Layton still moved the ball more efficiently than Weber did, picking up five first downs to Webers three. To start the fourth quarter, Weber gained good field position at the Layton 43 and with Edwards leading the way through the air, guided Weber to the Layton eight yard line before Trent Workman scored. Perhaps a boost that will be im- portant to next week, was Laytons final offensive possession. That drive started on Laytons own nine yard line with 5:13 remaining. The key plays were three passes from Troy Murray to Boyd Murray, two brothers, which Weber 17 yard line. The score covered 61 yards. Phelts, who had numerous assisted and unassisted tackles, commented afterwards, At least once this year we wanted to hold an opponent to under eight points and finally we did it, in fact we almost shut them out. Troy has quite an understanding of the quarterback position and he likes to explore the limits without going too far, said Wood, Theres no question that a big part of our success this year has hinged on his ability to find Chris (Parrish) and the other people. Troy believes in our system, has an excellent understanding all the way around. Murray, who won the starting quarterback position early during his sophomore season, will be a mainstay for the Lancers for this year and next.
