Michael DEAR CONCERNED: school is not new in many parts of The concept of the country. Many California school districts have had schools for some time with very favorable response. Not schools have adopted the program, but those who Utah many have say they like it and that it works. The Jordan School District in the Salt Lake area, as well as the Alpine and d program in some of Orem school districts operate a their elementary schools. Parents involved in the Jordan district were generally opposed to the idea, but came to it out of necessity. Classrooms were extremely overcrowded and they were faced with d or school. Double sessions meant that children on the early schedule must leave home before dawn and those on the later schedule would not leave school until after dark. Given those options, most parents voted for the alternative school. After six months of this'program, parents are in favor by a margin of 20-They say that it has eased classroom crowding ratio has decreased, and parents dramatically. Teacher-pupi- l feel that quality teaching has thus increased. Many felt that another advantage was that there was less need for review time at the beginning of the school year, resulting in faster student progress. First priority is given to keeping children from one family on the same schedule. Vacation times occur together and some families commented that they have enjoyed winter vacations, which they could never take before. There are five tracks" from which families select a first, second and third choice. Data is then fed into a computer, and using a given set of rules, the computer selects a track for each child. The rules are that all tracks must be equally populated and that each class in each grade have an equal number of students. Registration priorities are based on: (I) families, keeping each child on the same track), (2) special needs, and (3) neighborhood requests, (keeping neighborhoods together insofar as possible). In addition, there is one school which still keeps the regular nine month schedule, and parents may register their child there, providing they furnish transportation. Four of the tracks began the end of July, with the fifth beginning late in August. An example of one track is as follows: year-roun- d year-roun- d year-roun- double-session- s McAllister.
