Show Blake Hart inspired team with comeback. Davis THE CHAIN GANG STRIKES Hart makes Highs fearless chain gang gears up for another relentless evening with the Darts. inspirational comeback in Falcon rout Falcons humbled by Darts Continued second quarter was a field goal by Kyle Knowles but there was plenty of good defense displayed by both sides. Willard did intercept a Chris Garcia pass and ran it back 65 yards for a TDonly to have it called back by a clipping 35-ya- penalty. The Falcons biggest scoring opportunity of the first half came with 3:28 left when Singley fumbled on the Davis 27 yard line. But a costly clipping penalty and Davis staunch defense held Clearfield in check again. DAVIS PICKED up the scoring again in the third quarter by scoring twice. It started first as Card returned a punt 25 yards to his own 47 yard line. Card then proceeded to pick up 56 yards on four carries including a run from 8 yards for a touchdown. After another Willard interception, Rob Warden picked up 31 yards on four carries and finally a five yard run for the other score. ALL THE while, Clearfield could do nothing on offense. Junior Same Gardiner scored Davis final tw'o scores, one from 42 yards and another from 4 yards, the only two times he touched the ball against Clearfield. CLEARFIELDS only touchdown came with 2:57 left when Garcia connected with Darrell Hicks from 40 yards out. Paul Taylors PAT was good. By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports KAYSVILLE Just ask the Darts asked his wife Debbie or if she asked him, but today Mrs. Dickson By KEITH DUNCAN is in the limelight as she and Annet- - If a spy were KAYSVILLE sent to Davis High to resolve the mystery why the Darts are consistently spectacular in football, his testimony would surely include the topic of aerobic dance. WHAT? WHAT does aerobics have to do with Dart football? The answer is plenty. IT WAS just a few seasons back that quirk led to quick and the next thing you know, is Elavis High seplayers are doing aerobics as a rious measure to increase their capabilities on the football field. Crazy as it sounds, its a true blue thing. JIM DICKSON, the Davis coach, doesnt remember if he the Dart te Bitner consistently-leaaerofootball players in bic workouts every Monday afternoon and Saturday morning. According to the Davis High players, they love it. The most popular statement that comes out of them is that aerobics is ten times more fun than running for 30 mte inutes. THIS YEARS crew thoroughly enjoy their workouts and players who have graduated have complained they miss the workouts. Dickson, as a coach, loves the strenuous workout. Not only do the players participate in the workouts, but Mrs. Dickson and Mrs. Bitner also have the coaches working out with the group. ONE POSITIVE thing about it is that Coach Dickson and Coach Bruce Bitner get to spend a little more time with their wives. Its as Dickson put it, Its made it easier with Debbie and Annette to understand why we as coaches spend so much time. And at the same time, these two contribute a great deal to our program. Aerobic dance is said to improve not only the cardiovascular system, but Dickson knows it has helped his players in flexibility, coordination, quickness and agility. I BELIEVE the kids approached the aerobics with an open mind at first and now they are finding out they get their 30 minutes of cardiovascular work as well as a chance to listen to some of their favorite songs. Debbie and Annette try to mix it up a little with the songs. All in all the half hour goes by a whole lot faster than running for 30 minutes. "1 may not look like it, said Dickson, But Ive done both and I certainly like aerobics more. MRS. DICKSON, who has taught physical education and health at Central Junior High for ten years now, said he loves participating with the players. Tve loved aerobics from the beginning but to see the football players do it is great. Its more fun to see them do it than anyone else, said Mrs. Dickson. IN THE beginning, it was an alternating thing between running and aerobics, but as time progressed there was a majority vote to get rid of the running. I think aerobics is better be- cause you get the use of your arms too. You can run very slowly for 30 minutes but with aerobics you have to keep up with the beat. Overall its much more enjoyable, said Debbie. WITH BOTH Debbie and Annette in front, the kids have two leaders to identify with. The aerobics trend has worked itself right into the other sports, everything from wrestling to girls basketball. Its become quite a thing from something quite simple in the beginning. favorite tune is which is an old tune, THE KIDS YMCA, but they love it, said Debbie. Annette Bitner, the spouse to Bruce Bitner who assists in football and is the head soccer coach, has taught aerobics professionally for sometime now. She also realizes the importance of aerobics too. mix quite well. Debbie Dickson and Annette Bitner have shown that aerobics and football - Blake Hart had plenty of heart last Friday night. AFTER A freak accident which crippled his left hand during summer football practice, Davis High senior Blake Hart bit his lip as it forced him to sit out the Darts two opening games against Weber and Ben Lomond. But the doctor said okay to Friday night's encounter with Clearfield and Hart certainly made the best of it. Aerobics, TBs do mix Journal Sports -- I LIKE our involvement with the team, said Annette, Its fortunate because not many wives can be involved with their husband's work. On Friday night I certainly feel a part of everything. Its fun too because the kids are so enthusiastic about it. FROM HIS defensive end position he was simply a case of wild fire as he welcomed Falcon after Falcon to Kaysville. Despite the hand injury he hit people head on and combined with the rest of his teammates to humiliate Clearfield's offense. said Hart the I cant tell you how bad I wanted to come back, next morning after Davis 44-- 7 romping over Clearfield. It was a problem on my part at first in that I was trying to come back too fast and too quick. But the coaches tamed me down and told me to take my time. HART, WHO also plays the fullback position, came back Friday as a defensive player only which he felt was a smart thing in the comeback process. I still cant hold onto the ball with the pad I wear so Friday 1 got to concentrate on defense only. I felt fresh out there going one way and maybe thats why I was so effective, he said. n Hart was a hunting machine, both on defense and on could be heard in Farmington and never once His hits teams. special did he favor the padded hand. one-ma- ONCE THE juices get flowing, you forget everything," said Hart. I was glad to be back and ready to kill some people. He said Coach Jim Dickson had a lot to do with getting him up for the game. In three weeks, the doctors say Hart will have everything off his hand and then his offensive skills might be exploited. "I'm ready for that side of the field too, continued Hart. PERHAPS one reason that Hart is glad to be back is that he didn't want to go two seasons in a row with nagging injuries. Last season he was involved in an auto accident which caused some back injuries and never allowed him to get into it. It was tough for me, said Hart. "I love contact and hitting. To be on the sidelines just kills me." HART ST YS involved all year round too. Hell go from football to wrestling and since a sophomore has been on the varsity soccer team. Hes considerd a very good soccer player. But as far as football goes, Hart says this year's team is a perfect blend of underclassmen and seniors. During football season I believe all the classes are closer than they ever get and maybe this year were closer than weve ever been. We do things together, not in our own little clicks. I WASN'T'T sure at first, but our composure has kept us way ahead of our competition." And Blakes teammates are happy to have him back. During the Ben Lomond game they chanted time after time they couldn't wait till he was back. Because of that wanted to come out against Clearfield with fire and did," said Hart. 1 1 HART, BECAUSE of his aggressive style, is one of Coach Dick- son's favorites. The thing I worried about was Hart trying to come back too soon. told him not to try and get it all done on the first series. And he did get after it," were Dickson's first words. I DICKSON said that with Hart's comeback, a new dimension has been added to the club. With Hart's quickness at one defensive end and playing there full time, it allows both Roger Horne and Trevor Page to split time at the other defensive end position. That is good in itself because Horne and Page both play offense and it gives them a chance to rest and be fresher, Lets just say that Hart's comeback was an inspiration to all of us," said Dickson. THE COACH was also confident that when Hart comes back to the offense, he'll be a power to be recognized. When that time comes the Darts could move Curtis Stoddard back to wing and both Rob Warden and Hart could eat it up in the fullback slot. |
