Offensively, Wood isn't quite ready tojump with praise. He feels that the ingredients are there but says some changes still have to be made to solidly a program that can score points and win consistently. IVE ALWAYS felt that you win games with offense and you win championships with defense. Tonight we had a championship effort but we've just got to improve ourselves offensively," continued Wood. The Layton quarterback situation is still up in the air and Wood say sit's still a fight between senior, junior and sophomore which means Travis Vought, Dave Harrison and Troy Murray respectively. The coaches were hoping that wouldn't take a backseat to all the hoopla. Well if you're wondering about it still and didn't hear the score, the nter hoopla didn't have a slim chance of affecting the Dart players as they whipped Ben L.omond High for their second straight easy victory over the Scots. 35-1- 7 THE WIN moved Davis' preseason maik to 0 and sends them 2-- into this week's county-clas- h against the Clearfield F'alcons. That game will go off on Friday night here at 7:30 p.m. One of the Davis trademarks in football as well as most of the other sports, is to improve with each game of the season. The Davis playeis not only were able to avoid the hoopla and excitement about other activities on Friday night, they were able to play a little better than their opener against Weber. AFTER ALL, Viewmont had beaten a good Clearfield team the week before, while the Lancers were getting drubbed by Bountiful. And with Fridays win, this year's version of the Lancers has already equalled last year's number of victories. And the Lancers won it by forcing, and capitalizing, on Viewmont mistakes. After a scoreless first quarter and a half, Layton finally gave the hometown fans something to cheer about with four minutes left in the second quarter. Quarterback Dave Harrison tossed a nifty THERE WERE less turnovers, less interceptions and overall the double wing got back into the swing of things as it rolled up 307 yards rushing. Coach Jim Dickson claims he was fairly proud of his bunch. "We had a great practice on Wednesday . perhaps our best one yet. Then on Thursday the kids prepped up under the lights and anticipated playing the next night in front of a hometown crowd. FRIDAY was do it time and they did it, said Dickson. Maybe the thing that pleased said Dickson. Card still managed to get 40 yards on just 8 carries and he scored a touchdown, a seven yard run in the second quarter. THE BACK who had an unbelievable night was senior Kurt Mounteer who rushed for 174 yards on just 10 carries. Mounteer scored Davis' final touchdown on the ground from 61 yards out and he also collected a scoring pass from QB Clay Singley. It was quite a night for the guy because of the concentration on Card. yards rushing and position advantage that should opposing coach Hatch admitted that everything we did, Layton defended. From that point, Joe Wood's defense did a number on the Vikings, sacking Burningham many times, including once on a punt attempt at the Viewmont one. Layton sewed the game up two plays after that when Richard Lovelace dove in from the one for the final touchdown. Those scores were sandwiched around a 27 yard field goal by Jon Turner. The ball eventually squirted harmlessly out of the end zone for a safety. The first bullet had been dodged. On the ensuing free kick, the punt sailed over Viewmonts front receivers and rolled all the way to the Viking five. AS IT did a week ago during its victory at Clearfield, the Viking offense came out fired up to start the second half. Viewmont quarterback Jason Burningham completed three quick passes, moving to the Layton 29. But the Lancer defense made a comeback of its own at that point, knocking down one pass and sacking Burningham twice. On fourth and long, the Vikings were forced to punt.
