Show SEPTEMBER 2, 1986 Reflections Ive learned to Dad appreciate By TOM HARALDSEN Reflex-Journ- Editor al Im 33, but still his son. And when Im around him, I find myself feeling much safer because hes there. I My father visited for four days last week. in Califorlives dont get to see him much, as he nia and travels frequently in his occupation. So a visit from him is always a special opportunity As weve done so many times since I left home for college 15 years ago. Dad and I spent a lot of time looking back, on the years when he and my mother, who died last year, tried to raise me and keep me out of trouble. We laughed at some of my antics as a youth. And there were those moments when, silently, we both wished we could turn back time and relive some of those experiences. When he finally boarded his plane last Sunday, bidding farewell to his grandchildren, whom he sees much too infrequently, it was a sad moment for all of us. And already were looking forward to his next visit in the summer of 1987. Being with Dad always helps put things back in perspective. As young children, we cling to our parents, looking to them for strength, safety and guidance. But often as we get older, and approach our teens, we start to put space between ourselves and them. We think we know it all, and can solve just about any problem, with the exception of transportation of course (Dad, can I borrow the car?) As teenagers, the rebellion hits its zenith. We are almost embarrassed to be seen with our folks, whether it is out eating, or shopping, even at a movie. This isnt because of anything they have done--i- t is simply a matter of feeling our teenage independence, and trying to grow . up too fast. The funny thing about this is that weve all seen it happen in our lives, and the sad thing is that it still happens with teenagers today. Its not so much a matter of still loving our parents, its a matter of truly appreciating them for all and provided. theyve done When 1 became a parent myself almost 10 years ago, the lesson began to sink in. Was I guilty of the same offenses that I was worried my children might fall prey to? If in my own life I had not really learned to appreciate my parents concern and love for me until after 1 left the nest, could I expect more from my own kids? Now, when I think of Dad, I think of all the times he disciplined or restricted me for my own good. I see the wisdom there now. And I see something else his legacy. By definition, my Norwegian surname suggests that somewhere along the line, I am a descendant of the son of Harald. That gives me a great responsibility not to tarnish his name. Perhaps living a life that honors the name of our parents is the greatest gift we can give them. There may be some who read this who scoff, who think to themselves it shows weakness to still be admittedly dependent on parents at 33. I think those who arent, who cant look back on all their parents did for them with appreciation and gratitude, are much weaker than I. I call this column reflections, and reflect I did last weekend when Dad was in town. We didnt always get along, or see eye to eye when I was growing up. But the lessons he taught me are helping me now with my children. Im glad for the example hes been, and only hope that someday, somehow, I can make him proud, and show him how much I appreciate the force hes been, and is, in my life. are back in action.
