Show Layton High may put up immediate adoption papers LAYTON - Layton High has immediate adoption plans for about 60 or 70 kids. -- AND WHY not, these kids prob- ably spend more time there than any place else these days. Everyone is for it too, the parents, the faculty and of course the coaches who have done a good job fathering these kids from the hot summer days until today. OF COURSE there isnt going to be any such action, but with so much positive time being spent in one place, good things have begun to happen with Joe Wood and his 85 football team. The best thing yet to take place was Layton Highs 2 whipping of Woods Cross last Friday night in front of a good sized Lancer football crowd. That was the second win in a row for Layton and the trouncing was a rare sight for a school starved for football success. 38-1- Troy Murray (12) hands off to Richard Lovelace in touchdowns scored in the ground. Laytons 38-1- 2 romp over Woods Cross. Murray himself had BOYD MURRAY, a junior outside linebacker, who had another fine outing against the cats, commented, Coach Wood got us fired up through the summer and its only getting better with each week that comes. You dont mind spending all the time we do preparing for games if you have success. Those kind of words are representative of all the players who have now got a 1 record and prepare this week for their Region One opener against the Weber Warriors in Pleasant View. 3 2-- Sophomore leads the way BUT BOYD wasnt the only Murray who starred last Friday night. Another one was his little Murray scums to top LAYTON -- - It was q calling that was meant to be. brother Troy who as a sophomore started against Woods Cross and proceeded to net three running touchdowns and 104 yards. He also had another 60 yards passing. It all came together to help Layton have one of their more memorable nights of prep football in years. There was certainly a lot of room for celebration because part of that. LAYTONS quarterback question mark was answered with ease last week as Coach Joe Wood pointed his finger at sophomore Tro$ Murray and told him, You are our man. Thats all that Murray needed as he exploded last Friday night for 104 yards rushing, 60 yards passing and three touchdowns scored on the ground. He also passed for a conversion. IT WAS only Monday of last week that Coach Wood asked his youngest quarterback to switch from fourth period conditioning to eighth period conditioning so he could spend time with the Layton High seniors. The next move came that same evening when Murray was asked to run the first string offense. FINALLY ON Wednesday, Wood came up to Murray while the kids were warming up for practice and said, Troy, youll be our man on Friday. "That helped me a lot, said Murray, To know that he has confidence in me. I felt a mile high after that. IVE GOT a lot of work to do, especially on my fundamentals, work hard and them Ill down, continued Murray. get Murrays three touchdowns on the ground came from 65 yards there were away, nine yards and one yard out. On the Harris. from Paul and Shane both Pacheco blocks key but IN THE passing department, Murray said his receivers ran. great routes and it helped him because only two passes went incomplete. Murrays performance had the fans a talking too. The victory was Laytons second victory in a row and he was a big 38-1- 2 already this team has won twice as ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL, Mel Manning, made the comment, Troy was an eyeful, exciting to watch.; By KEITH DUNCAN KAYSVILLE - It really wasn't supposed to be the way it went, according to both sides, but none -- the less it was. DAVIS thoroughly whipped Clearfield 44-- 7 last Friday night in both teams final game. pre-seas- But in talking to Clearfield players and coaches before the game, it was supposed to be a lot closer. Even the Davis peope, o undent theyd win, didn't believe itd turn out that bad. It was a tremendous tune-u- p for the Darts who open their league schedule this week at Woods Cross High School. It will be the cats homecoming and the host school will be hungry, searching for theii first victory of the '85 season. moving. DURING THE summer I knew Troy was going to be our future in terms of the type of athlet he was. He doesnt throw the ball mechanically any better than the other guys weve got and his arm isnt as strong, although it got a lot stronger in recent weks. But all along I knew Troy was best fitted for the type of offense that we run. It was just a matter of time before the decision was to be made. But once he gets into game situations, hes a player and a performer. He has great, great vision on the field in terms of where to throw and when to throw. Hes also an elusive runner. As a sophomore, we just want him to keep being hungry and I know hell keep that up. pre-gam- e, n; IT WAS very interesting during the week that one day he just happened to be lifting with my starting backfield. I just got the feeling that day that the rest of the backfield knew who their bread and butter was. Even in the game, William Reid walked off the field one time and said, Troy can do it, he really can.' Fletcher. WERE STILL improving but it was great to have such a fine game from him, said Coach Wood. CLEARFIELD on the other hand, is still searching for answers as their league schedule begins. Theyll also be on the road this week to face a good Roy High team. The Falcon offense just hasn't got untracked yet. The Falcons could do virtually nothing in their offensive attempts last Friday night, especially in the first half. They didnt earn their first first down until the last play of the half. CRAIG CARTER, the superb Falcon running back, was held to just 60 yards after gaining a 100-plin his first two games. But it wasn't so much that Clearfields offense couldnt get going, as much as Davis defense was just that good. David Peterson, Roger Horne, Trevor Page, Chris Card, Blake Hart and a host of others made things very miserable for Brent Hancocks crew. LAYTON fell behind in their third game 6--0 but William Reids run tied the score. In seven-yar- d the second quarter Murray had a one-yar- d dive for a TD and hit Richard Lovelace for a conversion which made it 14-As the gun was ready to sound to end the first half, Robert Ayres went into the end zone from short range to make it 21-- 6 at half. LAYTONS final scores came from Murray, one from 65 yards away and another from nine yards out. Shane Harris, one of Layton's offensive line tackles, commented, Were playing as team right now, everybody is together. I BELIEVE we made Bountiful look better than what they were and if we played them again, the score would be much closer. After that game we desired to work harder, there wasnt any letdown. Against Viewmont and Woods Cross weve only got better because weve wanted to. One of Harris favorite plays includes an end around sweep with either Paul Pacheco, Reid or Lovelace running with the ball. ITS A much funner season for Harris this year. An injury forced him out of many of last years games. Paul Smith, the Layton principal summed it up, The kids have enthusiasm and it clearly spills over into the rest of the school. THEYVE worked hard for theyve got. The coaches have got them working before school and after school and before long we might have to go to court to get formal adoption papers on what them. I dont know what the secret is other than the kids are high on these coaches and are willing to do anything they ask them to do. THE DART offense scored 17 points in the first half and it could have been much, much worse. The Darts fumbled the ball five times and lost four of them. Clay Singley went 6 for 9 passing and had 133 yards including a gainer to Greg Willard on Davis very first offensive play. 36-ya- rd Two possessions later Singley found Willard again on a 38- - yard touchdown pass with Kurt Moun-tee- r making the key block.
