Those include Robert Steed who lost a narrow decision to Scott Jenks at 1X8 lbs. and had to settle for second place. Cary Blood also 4 came through and placed fourth in the heavyweight division. The third Davis wrestler to piace in the top six was Nate Hinckley at 148 lbs. who finally took sixth place. Jim Dickson, the Davis coach, said he was a bit disappointed that he didn't help to produce a state champion but conmented in review', "I'm happy with the kids and will never be disappointed in what they accomplished." DICKSON SAID he could have never made it through the year like he did without the seniors he had pulling for the entire team. "They (seniors) took a lot of pressure off me. Its not in every program that you will find seniors that are as dedicated to the program as we had here I though all year long that we had a very unique situation her, Dickson said. Dickson was pleased to see that all the Davis County schools were represented well in the 1982 event. All six coun-- . ty schools were able to finish among the top 13 and of the 12 weight divisions, three of the champions came from Davis County. . . - : : ' WRESTLING is becoming more competitive all the time. A big reason for that is the fact that many of the coaches now were former college wrestlers just like the football coaches ; : : ' : were r pressure." THE LANCERS, Falcons and Darts pride themselves in trying to land a spot in the tournament each and every year. Very seldom do they miss. One team that left its mark on prep basketball in Layton would have to be the squad of 1978-7which Coach Doug Moon recalls as one of the finest gathering of Layton basketball players in the schools history. 9 THE SQUAD won the region title and went on to finish fourth in the state battle, the best finish ever for a Layton basketball team. It might be interesting to look back and see the faces of yesterday and discover where they are now. GORDON ANDERSON was one of the exceptional basketball players that Coach Moon has been able to coach during his long basketball career. Gordon was a key member of team and later the 1978-7- 9 went on an LDS mission. Brandon Flint was also a member of that team. Big MATT STIREMAN was also an outstanding player that year and is presently playing basketball at Trade Tech in Orem with another former Lancer, Karl Woodward. Trace Chatman was one of the starting guards that year and he too is on an LDS mission. DAVE NIELSON was an assistant coach to Moon during those basketball days ana is today, still with Moon. After high school is said and done, Matt wants to continue on in athletic training and the U. of U. The coaches at Davis have committed to him often that they will do anything possible to see his hopes come to pass. IT ALL started for Matt in junior high where he took a liking to Jack Reese, who helped coach there. I liked the coach and sports, you couldnt help but feel like you were somebody when you were associated with them. I wanted to be a part of athletics but knew I probably couldnt play. Helping the team as a manager was the next best thing to it, said Kemp. former football coaches," said Dickson. ; IT HASNT been easy for Steed to sit all year long and watch his younger teammates lose in lower weight brackets. Of the nine people that Davis sent to the state championships, six of them were underclassmen. "Sometimes it was frustrating, said Steed, I could get so overworked about it that I could wrestle out of control w hen it became my turn. Later in the season however, I used those losses to motivate me to w in. It puts a lot of pressure on me, but I like that kind of LAYTON State tournament time is coming up quickly for schools like Layton, Clearfield and Davis. The heyday event of the basketball year attracts thousands to the Special Events Center in Salt Lake City and sometimes can mark the most successful moments in basketball for these schools. IT WAS Davis Highs own Matt Kemp that Gardner recently reflected on when he said, Our ball program could do alright without fine players like Brian Taylor, but without guys like Matt Kemp, wed never make it, said Gardner, the veteran basketball coach. Kemp is one of those guys who never receives much attention for what he does but the job he gets done is something no one could do without. BECOMING a certified athletic trainer sounds said Kemp. like something I could really get interested in, WHEN I came to Davis High I immediately took a liking to the coaches there. Everyone knows they are a great bunch of guys. Without being a manager I could have never got to know them the way I know them now, he said. The same kind of feeling existed with the players in the various sports. Matt says without being a manager he could have never known the athletes the way he knows them now. YOU MIGHT see him at a wrestling match coordinating activities whith those who run the wrestling time clock, he is found every Friday night with the Davis Football players making absolutely certain their equipment is top notch and you could make a safe bet of 50 bucks that the players uniforms will always be clean and pressed for the next big game. He is the guy who makes certain that the football field is set up for Friday night games he is also the man responsible for getting scores and boxscores to the news media the very night they take place. He says basketball has been the easiest sport to manage mainly because of the fewer number of people in the sport. But he says, there is nothing like football and fall time with all its excitement and glamour. IT ALL started his freshman year with the Darts. He began first off in assisting Frank Thompson with freshman football and basketball. It didnt take Gardner long before he noticed Kemps dedication to Davis sports and soon had him recruited to assist in varsity chores. He learned his duties quickly that sophomore year and because of that has been the head manager for the past two years. The Davis coaches have entrusted him with so many key responsibilities in two years that they face a small dilemma when he graduates this spring. mores of which Moon says he does an "outstanding job.
