From an electrical reliability standpoint, people have nothing to fear. They will have power? Cornish emphasizes that it's important for people not to panic. um, there may be an increase in the number of power poles knocked out by drunk drivers. If there are any Y2K power outages, its probably from a downed power pole, not from a computer glitch? While Cornish doesn't plan on making any special Y2K preparations for his family, he does keep a ready supply of flashlights, extra batteries and other emergency equipment handy for unforseen crises. Smart Springer is public affairs officer for the DNR. He was joined by Karl Kappe, strategic planner with the State Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands and Fruit Heights resident Brenda Landureth, who assists with public relations. They touched on a wide range of issues affecting the lake and, indirectly Davis County. Springer emphasized that the team preparing the management report has not looked at the feasibility of part of the Legacy Highway being constructed through the lake. That is not in our man. I would characterize as reasonable doubt over that proposal being one that could be seriously considered, Kappe said. There has been too little discussion of potential adverse 72-ho- impacts. Landureth has researched the history of prior proposals that would dam andor create fresh water lakes in part of the Great Salt Lake. If (such) designs create a shallow body of water? Officials, however, vow to balance the myriad competing interests for the lake. sediment and the merging of fresh and salt water bodies. That could impact wetlands on the east side. Its important that we protect wildlife sovereign lands. In line with public comment received during three Davis County meetings and other similar sessions, the management plan proposes keeping public areas of the lake concentrated on the east side, such as the Migratory Bird Refuge, Waterfowl Area, and the like. Generally, that means keeping gas leasing, salt industries and mining on the west. Great Salt Lake Minerals would not be happy if we (try to) manipulate the lake, and the Audubon Society doesnt necessarily like mineral leasing. Many (special) interests have approached their legislators on various issues, Springer said. And comparing a fresh-watproposal down south to Willard Bay wont work because of the magnitude of water in the Davis County portion of the lake compared to Willard Bay, Kappe said.
