But Utahs age seems to be all people want to talk about concerning the Jazz this year. The national media have all but written them off as team whose potential was destroyed by a superhero in red, whose name escapes me at the moment. It appears that even locals have jumped on this fairweathered bandwagon. The Jazz are having a hard time selling out games, barely selling out opening night against the Lakers at gametime. Is no one paying attention? Sure theyve lost a couple to start out, but someone remind me the last time the Jazz didn't start slow. Jeff Homacek is playing the best ball he has in years. Did anyone see him run Benedict, oops, I mean Shandon Anderson all over the court and back last week? Homey made Anderson take a closer look at the hard working team led by the best power forward in the league that he left, for an underachieving team led by the fattest power forward in the Brittany Vasquez Northridge league. Lisa Braithwaite Adrienne Larson Bountiful ' S vVn' r '' V ' ' Vv' s Ov John Stockton has yet to show his age either. With the help of increased minutes for Jacques Vaughn (finally), who has waited patiently for his shot to shine, Stockton is looking like he's 33 years old again. Jerry Sloan has finally realized that hes got to focus more on the young talent that the Jazz have, and it's paying off. More minutes for Vaughn means he'll soon develop Michelle Murri Bountiful Layton V Jordan Livingston into the point guard he proved he could be at Kansas. Scott Padgett and especially Quincy Lewis are two of the most talented young rookies Utah has had in a while, and Sloan is giving them the minutes they deserve. Now if we could just change the downtown night life a little to keep these guys around in the future. The fact is, last year's shortened season hurt the Jazz. Playing five games in six days is simply too much for men pushing forty to deal with. Now that they're back to a normal schedule that they can handle, the Jazz can still beat any team out there. The proof came on Tuesday night, when they handed Portland their first loss of the season. Portland is now the best team on paper in the West, after San Antonio's loss of Shaun Elliot, and the Jazz proved that theyre not to be ignored. If Bryon Russell can become consistent with his wide open threes, and Howard Isley would stop trying to make big plays he's incapable of, this team will shock everyone. So. don't believe the hype, the Jazz aren't just old, they're experienced. . I'm debating my options. Vikes look for football coach BOUNTIFUL - The Viewmont Vikings are looking for someone to pick up the pieces to their crumbling football program. This after sources say that head coach Ross Harris has turned in his resignation. The Vikings didn't win a game this past year, and have won only two regular season games in the last three ' years. ; Flarris was unavailable for comment, but supposedly Is looking to spend more time with his family. A lot of pressure had been brought down on him after the 1998 debacle. He had claimed that it was the best team he had ever coached, and then proceeded to record one victory. Possible replacements are head baseball coach Roger Farnsworth and counselor and wrestling coach Brad Christensen. It adds to the constant revolving door of Viewmont coaches. They have now replaced their volleyball, basketball, baseball twice, and now football coaches in the last three years.
