For nearly all of his 95 years on earth his body has been strong and his mind alert. Even now he labors in his Clearfield garden to produce some of the finest tomatoes in Davis County. The white-haire- d gentleman eagerly shares his harvest each year with friends and family. Mark Argyle, quite simply, is a wonder to behold, say those who know him. My doctor said most people your age have already checked out! he says with a chuckle. Argyle figures he has had his fair share of living. After talking about his family and his beloved wife, to whom he was married for nearly 55 years, Argyle said. I long for death. Hoping my sweet wife will be there to greet me! Marks wife Susan certainly will be the first among a host of friends and themfamily eager to selves with this gentleman. Although he says he wants to go, his body may not cooperate. It is too healthy. I had the flu once in 1918 and later had my appendix out. But thats about it, he said. Argyle was bom Dec. 8, 1904 in I was bom on the West Bountiful. west end of Pages Lane, west of the tracks. We didn't have electricity. We just had cold water. I was the fifth of seven kids. Dad was a farmer. We had to carry water 75 feet to the house. We raised cows, hay grain and stuff. We took cereal to the mill in Bountiful. When I was young the only recreation I had was hunting ducks, geese and pheasants. The program presented 63 scholarships to spouses and children of those who died in d accidents covered by WCE Kaysville resident Nathan Isom was awarded a scholarship from WCF and is now attending Weber State University. Isom lost his father. Kevin, in a 1992 workplace work-relate- accident. Most Legacy of Learning scholarships total $1,500 stueach, however, partial scholarships are sometimes awarded to part-tim- e dents. Scholarship recipients span the state from Logan to Cedar City, and include both children and spouses of those who have died in the workplace. WCF which is owned by its policy holders, has awarded nearly 400 scholarships worth some $600,000 since 1990. the last 10 years, we have seen the Legacy of Learning program positively affect hundreds of lives, said Melvin C. Green, chairman of WCFs board of directors. It demonstrates WCFs commitment to Utah employers and workers. Selection criteria include grade-poiaverage, standard test scores, general character, community involvement and financial need. Recipients may apply for scholarships each year they remain in college. WCF places no limits on the number of family members who can receive Legacy of Learning scholarships. The list of 1999 recipients includes 11 families with more than one person receiving aid provided by WCE Families suffering tragic losses sometimes find it difficult to continue on and be successful, said Green. WCF is helping to improve the lives of those families by providing a means for them to further their education! WCF also established Safe Workplace scholarships in 1997 to help reduce the number of accidents and deaths that occur on the job. Workplace safety is a major priority for WCE said Green. With the help of programs that encourage safety, workplace accidents have seen a drop over the last several years. We would like to see that trend continue! WCF has insured Utah employers and their employees since 1917 The company covers more than 28,000 Utah companies. 0er nt program rated excellent according to poll respondents W1C FARMINGTON Overall, patrons of the Women, Infants and Children in Davis County are satisfied with the services they receive. program The Davis Board of Health heard a report on a survey conducted in both the Layton and Bountiful WIC offices, which indicate the staff is caring and helpful. Jennifer Barnett, an employee with the Bountiful office, told health board members, Were very pleased with the results. The survey compared answers of the countys WIC participants with answers of WIC participants statewide. Some 480 county participants were questioned on the value of the program, with 237 rating the services excellent and another 191 saying they were very good. Of 6,797 survey participants statewide, 45.7 percent said the services were usually kept their appointments. FOR YOU? ATV DR RENT 546-29- 76 was on my mission; he said. The couple became parents to a higher percentage of high school students taking the AP exam than the percent of students participating across the state of Utah and the nation. Crookston and Crandall sit at the top of the heap since each, as juniors last year, took four AP tests; more than any other junior in the district. Crookston tested in AP Biology, English Language and Composition, European History and Calculus, and passed each class. As a matter of fact, he received a perfect score in About this time we had a terrible accident which changed our lives forever. My wife was pregnant with Lola May and we were on our way to the hospital when we were involved in a head-o- n accident. My wife was in the hospital for three weeks. She developed a blood clot in her leg, Mark said. The doctors were able to save both the mother and baby, but Susans health was never the same. Mark attended the University of Utahs school of business and quickly took a job as an accountant and book keeper for Occidental Seed Company in Salt Lake City. He spent five years there until the Great Depression. Occidental closed in the early 30s at the top in AP testing Calculus. Crandall tested in AP United States History, Calculus, Physics Mechanics and PhysicsElectricity & Magnetism and also passed each. He also received a perfect score in Calculus. In a related note, district students continue to score well in ACT tests, achieving the same 22.1 overall composite score that was reached in 1998. The results are also higher than state and national averages. School District Davis Superintendent Dr. Darrell White was pleased with the news about the tests, and commented specifically about the Advanced Placement test results. Were very pleased and proud that the number of Advanced Placement tests taken by our students increased significantly and that the number of students who passed increased too; White said, so that makes it doubly significant. All in all, it represents an outstanding effort by our students, their parents and our teachers and support staffi . Attorney 7.6 Monday. Sept. 20 12:00 FOOD STORE 6 0Z. STOVE TOP LB.
