Show HIS skaters grab awards at Ocktoberfest Local ice The 1995 Oktoberfest Ice Skating Competition was held October 6 and 7 at the Cottonwood Heights Recreation Complex in Salt Lake City. Local skaters, representing the Utah Figure Skating Club, participated in the competition and placed in many events. Josiah Smith: First Place, Preliminary Boys Free Skate. Two Davis County men played key rolls in the victory: Hal LaBelle, Bountiful, former Davis High and Utah State University 17-2- 1. athlete; and Brent Peterson, Farmington, former Ben Lomond High and BYU athlete. Newell Farnsworth, coach and manager of Newells and from Alpine, Utah, said LaBelles clutch hitting and defensive play (shortstop) and Petersons power hitting were key factors in Newells success. En route to the championship Newells defeated teams from Salt Lake City; St. George; Detroit, Mich.; Lodi, Calif.; St. Albert, Canada; Portland; and San Louis Obispo, Calif. Newells defeated St. Albert, Canada 6-- 2 in the semifinal game Regional skating comes to Cottonwood Heights COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS Figure skaters from as far away as Hawaii, along with entrants from California, Nevada and Utah, will be featured in the 1995 Pacific Coast Regional Figure Skating Competition scheduled Nov. at the Cottonwood 6-- Heights Recreation Center. Competing from the Bountiful area in the novice division will be Kadee Leishman, Maren Burbidge and MacKenzie Baltz. Competing in the juvenile boys division will be Jed Hopkins. In past World Games they have won two silver medals and one bronze; eight of the 12 are over 55, but decided to stay inthe 50 age bracket until they won the gold.
