The Davis Board of Education is looking at recommendations which will ensure students are in class learning up until the last moment. Among the recommendations is that teachers take attendance all 180 days of school including the last week of school: that the last week (excluding the final two days) will be designated as final week in which no other activities pr events will be scheduled; year books will be distributed only on the final two days of the school year; graduation will be held either on or after the last day of school; no extended travel or trips will be scheduled the last two weeks; eliminate the senior activity in high schools; and schools te may schedule a career ladder day after the final day of school. Davis officials are concerned about the disruption which takes place the final couple of weeks of school. In presenting the recommendations. Assistant Superintendent Stephen Ronnenkamp reminded board members that American youngsters attend school only 180 days, while counterparts in many countries worldwide are in classes 220 to 240 days. Add to that the disruption which is often a part of the last couple of weeks of school and American kids are missing out. Over the past couple of years, the Davis School District has worked to improve instructional value in those final weeks of school. These guidelines, set up with the help of district principals, set goals to maximize instruction and minimize distractions, Ronnenkamp said. Capt. Jim Rampton said other people riding in the area noticed the wreck and went down the mountain to a home to call for help. Davis County Sheriff s dispatchers received" the call about 12:20 a.m., but a sheriff s spokesman said the accident had apparently occurred about 10 p.m. Rampton said the engine on the jeep was cold when they arrived. Officers became suspicious a kid- napping was taking place when they located an car. Investigation 1 girl in the indicated the girl was from Ogden and that Birky was transporting her to Idaho without her parents knowledge or permission. Further investigation revealed the child had been sexually abused in a Layton parking lot. Birky was arrested and booked into the Davis County Jail on kidnapping charges and sexual abuse of a child.
