Show Ths 'Bug' In Davis County Is Identified Dr. Richard Johns, Davis County Public Health director, direc-tor, confirmed Tuesday that the respiratory illness that caused school and health officials of-ficials to close Bountiful Jr. High for two days has been identified as Influenza B. AFTER THE school was closed two weeks ago, county and state health officials began extensive tests to determine de-termine the nature of the virus. Throat cultures and blood testing failed to reveal the nature of the illness until early this week. Later the illness spread to Central Davis Junior High in Layton and several elementary elemen-tary schools in the surrounding surround-ing areas. In both cases about 25 to 30 percent of the students were absent, but health and school officials decided not to close those schools. DR. JOHNS confirmed on Tuesday that the blood work at the Bureau of Disease Prevention was confirmed that the illness was the first outbreak of Influenza B in Utah. The flu, labeled the Davis Bug by some, has since spread to Salt Lake City and Morgan, he said. Outbreaks in the schools in Davis County have since subsided, sub-sided, Dr. Johns said, rk |
