Show Sun Times, November 28, 1979, Breast cancer leading cause of death for American women Breast cancer in America is the leading cause of cancer death in women and the number one cause of all deaths of women 40 to 44 years old. Yet women in 1979 have taken a giant step backward in the detection of the often-fatdisease. The reason for this setback is the increasing reluctance of many women al to undergo mammograms diagnostic or breast This is true despite the fact that nearly one woman in 13 will at some time in her life develop the disease. Beginning in 1975 when the news first surfaced about radiation-relate- d possible deaths in Southern Utah, radiation treatments of all types have been given a bad reputation, says Dr. Charles R. Smart, LDS Hospital chief of surgery and world renowned cancer expert. breast Many people listening to these news reports have become frightened about radiation simply because they dont realize the difference between atomic bomb fallout and diagnostic Dr. Smart continues. Instead they see danger in one area and carry this prejudice with them into their doctor's office. This fear of has resulted in a dramatic reduction in the number of mammograms being performed throughout Utah, Dr. Smart notes. It was the development of the mammogram that was perhaps the greatest step we took in the last 30 years in making an early diagnosis of breast cancer possible, he says. But in the aftermath of the Southern coverage, Utah fallout only one mam- mogram is today being performed for every four or five ordered in 1975. This has absolutely devastated the best hope we have had for making an improvement m detecting early breast cancer, says the cancer specialist. breast Today minimal cancer the stage before the tumor reaches the size of a only lump is being diagnosed in 9.2 percent of cancer patients in the United States. When a mammogram was used along with a physical examination in a large cancer screening demonstration project of the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Noisemakors Confetti thought. On March 28 every household in Utah will receive DISCOUNTS (EXPIRES NOV. 20 : jit, 30. 1979) DOWN HOLDS DEALS TILL detectable lump. But by that time nearly 0 of the women percent have already had the tumor spread from their breast to their underarm area. By then the best treatment we can recommend is complete removal of the diseased tissue, says Dr. Smart. We know if women 50 years old and older were given a mammogram every two or three years, there would be a reduction of over 40 percent in the number of cancer victims who die, he Thats not just says. theory. Its a fact. Even with the dramatic reduction in breast mammograms, Dr. Smart does admit the concerns about radiation risks have led to 30-4- 25-5- 0 Order Now A Savo $ i nOUtJTAIH OALOO A DIGT. What all this adds up to is that young people, many of them students, are not seeing as mud) of their mothers and fathers as they did a generation ago. This can have some serious effects on a childs progress in Make no mistake about it: Home is where character is largely formed in young people. It is in the home under the tutelage of parents, the children learn their first great lessons in honesty, care for others, t, the value of work, a desire to learn manners, and hundreds of other virtues. The principal American weakness, says Harrison, is our failure to understand an enemy who operates from premises which we fail to take seriously. At the heart of things lies a peculiarly American scorn for ideas, which hinders us in our dealings with the Soviets. This is part and parcel of what could be termed our businesslike approach to our relations with the Soviet Union, an approach whose underlying premise is that we and our opponents are basically businessmen at heart and that we should get down to g as quickly as possible and not be serious bothered by such nonsense as ideology.
