Show THE CITIZEN 4 BIBLE IS RIGHT. LINCOLN. When even ministers of the gospel say that the Volstead Act is an extreme and oppose compulsory prohibition, is it not about time that our lawmakers awoke to how ridiculous they are making themselves in the eyes of the public by trying to enforce a law which has been laughed at by the people for the past six years? In Biblical times wine was not only considered a luxury, but a of necessity, in the case of health, happiness and general pursuits business. Those who were faithful unto the Lord were blessed with Yesterday was Abraham Lincoln's birthday and the nation's attention was turned to the works of this great emancipator. The career of Lincoln was one of constant struggle against adverse circumstances. It proves that strength comes to men, not through freedom from difficulties, but through the strengthening of character by combat with fine wines. Jesus Christ went to a wedding and when he found that th be set out people had no wine, ordered that suflcient crocks or jugs and filled with water and he turned the water into wine and said, At the Lords supper, He Drink and be merry and happy. wine to that of water and the prohibitionists stood at a distance and cried, Behold, a wine bibber and a glutton. At this remark, Christ came back with the reply, It is not what a man puts into his mouth that hurts him, but what comes out. Will some prohibitionists tell us why it is sinful or criminal to take a drink? We know it is a disgrace to become polluted, but we contend that 99 per cent of the people are not to be judged by one per cent or less. tactics in People are becoming so disgusted with our dilly-dall- y the political arena that it would not be surprising to see a general upcleanrising of the decent people of the country and make a general out of all those who think they can ride the fences to get votes. What we need in office are men with convictions that are not afraid to stand up for what is honorable and good and will speak their minds accordingly. When anyone begins to reason with himself and comes to the belief that he is an out and out criminal because he has taken a drink of fermented liquor, there must be something grievously wrong with that mans mind. Our doctors are allowed to write prescriptions for opium, morphine, and other narcotic poisons, which have sent hundreds of people to the insane asylums, driven hundreds to crime, and yet that same doctor cannot write out a prescription for a pint of whisky for the individual that has the flu, and whisky is one of the best medicines there is for the flu. If a man is dying and a pint of whisky would ' save his life, some of our Christian propagandists says, Let em die, the sooner they all die the sooner we will have prohibition. No wonder people are beginning to shun the churches. Instead of getting good advice and an outstretched hand, such as Jesus Christ extended to the people, they are scolded and lectured until they lose all interest and become Love thy What better religion is there in the world than: neighbor as thyself, and do unto others as you would be done by. Attend to your own business, might be added. Our present paid prohibition propagandists do not preach that kind of religion; they use the big stick and they are going to drive the people with it or kill them all. Our present prohbition drive is the most vindictive and sacrilegious interference with personal liberties ever recorded in the history of the world. People have been outraged, homes broken into, innocent women dragged out of their baths and humiliated beyond all description, and all this done with the sanction of the law. Great heavens, what a law I Never did any savage tribe, or heathen nation, ever dare to curtail the liberties of their people as we have done in this country. Have you noticed how much noise is made about an arrest of some poor victim who has been caught with a pint? But what about the big bootlegger, who brings the poisoned stuff into your city in carload lots? How often are they knocked over? And those that are caught are soon out on bonds, pay their fines and continue on in their trade. The people soon learn of the real facts. The traffic becomes common talk on the street, and all wonder how it is that the big fellows can get by with their poisoned booze. There is one thing certain that the Bible does not condemn wine and the Eighteenth Amendment does. Which is right? One of them is wrong, and we believe the Bible is right. pre-ferr- non-believer- s. ed them. Lincoln was born in penuary, reared amid rough wilderness con- ditions which denied him opportunity for more than the most primitive education; he was disappointed in love, became a bankrupt in business, was defeated in his first race for the legislature, was denied a renomination to Congress, was shouldered aside for the governorship of Illinois, was refused the office of Commissioner of the General Land Office, was defeated for senator and was defeated for vice president in the Republican national convention of 1856. Such a procession of disappointments would have broken the spirit of a less heroic man. They only served to spur him on. He h$l convictions, and he had the faith that in the end the truth would be justified. Within four years after he bade farewell to his Springfield neighbors and took upon his shoulders the great burden of the Presidency in the face of the greatest civil war in history. He had become a world figure, destined to a colosal and an ever growing place in history. Radicals often quote Lincoln in support of their contentions. Lincoln was essentially a conservative man. He had no sentiments, he once declared, that did not spring from the Declaration of Independence and the American Constitution. He was abused by radicals all his life. He was sure footed. He went no faster than events would justify. In his speech at the Wisconsin state fair in 1958, Lincoln after exalting labor as a factor in society, warned the workers against pull- ing down the house of another lest they might also become houseless. He was a believer in the representative Republican form of government. He had not the slightest trace of socialism in his philosophy. His own career is a standing denial of the socialist doctrine that men are the creatures of environment. He rose above environment to become one of the strong men of history. Lincoln's untimely death no doubt buried with him many reforms in government, and there is no doubt that had he lived he would quickly have healed the great wound between the North and the South, left by the Civil War. HUMANE SOCIETY. Unless the good people of this state take some action in a financial way to support the Utah State Humane Society, this valuable organization may pass out of existence and die a natural death for the lack of funds. That would leave Utah as the only state in the Union without such an organization, and it would be a detriment to this state if this organization should be allowed to be abolished. While much money was appropriated for frills and thrills in the legislature of two years ago, for some unknown reason the small appropriation that had been annually fixed for this worthy organization was eliminated. There surely must have been some mistake yr who could have fought such a worthy cause? When we read about the activity and protective measures enforced to prevent cruelty to animals even in the far distant countries such as Turkey, India and China, it ought to make us blush with shame because of the lack of interest here. Really, what is the matter with Utah? Don't we want anything here? If the people only knew how cruelly and shamefully some horses are treated, and the good that has been accomplished in preventing lame horses and sick horses in being forced to work by inhumans who have no thought for the poor creatures, all would respond to the support of this worthy cause with alacrity. The Humane Society is a state organization and it has much work to do and it has accomplished a great reform in the treatment of horses, cows, dogs, in fact of all animals where cruelty has been found.
