That area exceeds the combined territory of Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Connecticut. It has been a wise policy and has brought a quicker development of our natural resources than the lease and royalty system. The desire for profits has induced our people to take the risks and endure the privations necessary in converting the great west into productive farm lands. Had they been compelled to turn back to the. government a large share of the money that their enterprise had won there would have been less incentive to great effort and the improvement of the public domain would have lagged. In the end the treasury has received more than it could have taken under any system of rents and royalties. The wealth created by the homesteaders furnishes an COLLECTIONS. There has been a movement on foot for some time in France to pay off the United States indebtedness contingent upon Germany's payment to France. In other words, if Germany dont pay France, we are out of luck. However, the officials at Washington refuse to listen to any such arrangement and will insist upon a just payment regardless of what Germany does. It is up to France to pay what she borrowed from us. The moneys loaned to European countries during the war were not based upon victory or defeat. We loaned the money and we expect to be paid back. The allies are trying to collect hugh sums from Germany. We went in and won the war but are not collecting anything. If Uncle Sam worked the European idea, this country would be doing the collecting, because to the victor belongs the spoils, but we are not trying to collect a sue on reparations but we have been trying hard to collect some of our good money loaned during the war, but so far England is the only country that made a big loan that has seen fit to start paying off her obligation to us. ()Such drunken sots, however, are generally allowed to As in this case, Heffner had come home drunk for years and beat his wife and daughter and no one seemed to care. The end, while a sad one, releases Mrs. Heffner from a living hell and she may now live in peace. TURKEY WINS. Turkey, rated as one of the chief criminals of the world war, has made Europe bow her head to Mohammed and accept humiliatTurkey ing and objectionable treaty after a nine months pow-woof Europe. Then Greece came along and rjvas bodily kicked out wanted a slite of Asiastic Turkey and were backed up by England. It may seem a futile undertaking at present, but the future may devise means for extracting minerals and oils of immense value to the United States. - 1. ' Mrs. Carrie Chapman Catt has talked with somebody and asserts that seventeen of the twenty countries look upon the Monroe doctrine not as a means for their own protection but as Mrs. furnishing an opportunity for the United States to grab. Catt shows she is getting beyond her depth when she forsakes a discussion of woman suffrage for a talk on western world politics. Practically all of the republics regard this country as their friend and protector, and recognize the Monroe doctrine as an effective bulwark against foreign aggrandizement. The Peruvian celebration of the Fourth of July is the latest evidence of that fact. If the association will turn the question over to the sugar trust, for solution, a satisfactory remedy will soon be found. There is a knack in boosting prices which the miners have not yet learned. It is getting too hot in the south for them. It is said that over 400,000 have left the south since the first of the year, and the end is not yet. As a result it is feared that cotton crops will prove a failure when labor cannot be secured to pick the cotton. Senator Smith W. Brookhart says that; the government must establish, and immediately, a government marketing agency if it expects to save agricultural from an impending calamity. The only question seriously involved is, how many political jobs will the new agency make provision for. But then the farmers have as much right to be protected as the steel trust and other corporations which are guaranteed a living wage. The bricklayers and carpenters are coming in for their guarantees pretty soon, and why not? The winter puts them out of business and they arc unable to work but their cost of living goes on just the same. . Americans are not only going to Europe to purchase their wines and beers, but now are flooding French courts with divorce suits. Anything to beat the American out of his fee. Is there no way to keep our money at home? Mr. Attorney, what has become of the slogan, Patronize Home Industry? Just what questions our senators and congressmen arc studying over in Europe is puzzling the people but the trek is certainly blazed by our politicians. God knows they will find enough to study in the old country, but why not study the tax questions in this country? It is beginning to appear that a wet country has some advantage after all, if not attraction. People may rest assured that the sudden drop in the stock market had little relation to values. There has been no interruption to the countrys prosperity. Practically all our industries arc working near capacity; there is plenty of work for everybody who cares to accept employment, and wages as a whole are high, with a tendency toward even better figures. |
