This August body went into Cache county in the autumn of three years ago and arbitrarily raised the tax valuation of all real property in the county ten per cent Then two years back this coming fall this august body entered the realms of Cache county for the second time, and , forsooth, thinking they had discovered some of the ancient treasures cached in this valley in the year 1825 by Peter Skeen Ogden with his company of Hudson Bay trappers, and William N. We scarcely realize that $6,000 annually is $500 for each month in one year; and that $3,000 annually means $250 for each and every month in .the year. If some of these officials and their deputies and employ- - ees were cast upon their own resources and were working for themselves and not for the public, they would be re- ceiving from $75 to $100 per month. Then there should be from 20 to 40 .per cent of public employees dispensed with, including brothers, Bisters and other relatives of the officials. Tax-payers are entitled to efficiency in preference to nepotism in public of-flee. If some of the of public employees were discharged, f;. a few of them would, perhaps, get out into the world and produce something instead of being leeches on the body politic, which would help reduce the i ! ; , ; : super-abundanc- e drive out this week end to Crystal Hot Lakes. The taxpayers are no longer the masters, but have become the servants of those whom they employ. This is manifest by the deportment of nearly all officers and employees of the city, county and state. The citizen and taxpayer is recognized as a supplicant at the throne of grace of the officer and deputy for some favor, which the latter may condescend to dole out. These conditions are brought on largely by reason of the fact that officers and their assistants are very much overpaid.
