Contact: Tom Gnocek, San Rafael Resource Area, BLM, 900 North 700 East Price, Ut. 84532. Participatory Planning The BLM is still seeking nominations for Areas of Critical Environmental Concern for the Moab area to be used in a new management plan. ACECs are special areas which receive extra protection. If you have a favorite area you would like to see protected, you can make a nomination directly to the BLM, or contact Kevin Walker, who is coordinating ACEC nominations for SUWA. 259-754- 0, My Petty Rebuttal, Part II. Recently Bill I lowell, the executive director for the Southeastern Assodation of Local Governments, and I jousted over illegal actions by the Moab District BLM Office. 1 le first attacked SUWA and me in a lengthy column in the Moab using false information. The I allowed me space to rebut his claims with dull, but verifiable detail. Howell then responded again, not by challenging any of the facts I laid out, but rather by just asserting, with no support, that again I was somehow wrong. While he and I have had some fun, the bottom line is that Mr. Howell has proven untrustworthy, to put it mildly. Mr. Howell's attack on SUWA is consistent with his frequent use of his position as executive director for the Southeastern Association of Local Governments as a pulpit to spread his "wise use" or "me first" agenda (undercutting the legitimate role the organization serves in other arenas). Howell frequently argues against wilderness, favoring rhetoric that ignores both the changes that have occurred in southern Utah and in the global economy we face. Rather than continue to fund Bill and his personal agenda, we should hire officials willing and capable of leading us into the future: the 1950s are over.
