Show PAGE 29 THE ZEPHYR AUGUST 1993 This train of thought points to the most pertinent question on the minds of many these what has caused our doctor shortage to occur? People want this problem solved, Exactly days: hence recruiting and retaining physicians was the survey's number one pressing issue. Moab has nothing to be ashamed of in what it offers medical doctors. They need patients: we have plenty already and we're a growing community. Doctors need security: we can offer them a lifetime job, in a beautiful and wild setting, with healthy recreational pursuits galore, and as much community involvement as they could want. They want quality of life: we can offer it We already have a small but functional clinic, and a newly renovated hospital with a capable professional staff. We've recruited doctors before and have always found some who want to relocate here. "SECOND VERSE, SAME AS THE FIRST:" AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE The number one request for new medical services is a health clinic. So the vital question is: How can we do it? What new ideas should be pursued to address this second most pressing issue? Once we get some new doctors in town, people with few resources and little or no insurance will need a reasonable price structure. Some of the costs can be bom by the community as a whole. What will be the "costs" of working with doctors to keep their basic prevention and primary health care costs down? And the other issues: low cost nursing care capability, regaining community support, birthing rooms, keeping the hospital economically viable, HMOs, illness and accident prevention programs. What research needs to be done in these areas to make informed progress towards acquiring these sendees for the people? And who is doing it? low-inco- EQUIPMENT RENTAL 989 N. And yet, the Hospital Board is conducting public hearings, saying to you "We need to build a new medical facility." I guess this is their answer to your needs. I want you to remember once again that the "Medical Office Building" issue was rated next to last as "most pressing issue" in the survey results. The Board is definitely providing an answer to something, but it's not the answer to any of the questions that you have asked. So long, Geronimo. And back to the Real World.
