Mantua Meanderings Mantua youth prepare tor summer's fun by Kathleen V. Palazzolo It's so hard to believe school will be. out again in a few days. (Seems they just went back to school!) Time seems to go by faster as we grow older. As a child, summer seemed to go on for months and months and months . . .practically forever! How clearly I can recall waking the first day of summer vacation . . .the excitement mingled with the joyful taste of freedom ! Just knowing there were so many days ahead to play and run and do just as I pleased. I never could understand my mothers lack of enthusiasm. I vaguely recall her drifting through the house as though she were walking in her sleep, muttering some thing like Good bye clean house. Good bye peace. Good bye quiet. Sometimes, I cant help wondering why I was in such a hurry to grow up. I would gladly go back to 8 p.m. bed time, and not being permitted to eat ice cream for breakfast, if I could wake up once again on the first day of summer vacation with all those wonderful feelings! Of course, there are a few kids this summer who have special reasons to look forward to going back to school. Chad Carr has been elected Senior Class President for next year; Richard Bigler was elected Senior Class Representative and Todd Reeves will be president of the National Honor Society. How very proud their parents must be! Not to mention how proud we all are of our Mantua youth. So many will be leaving school with awards for their fine service this past year. Lorna Rasmussen has won awards for her excellent ratings on the school debate team and for State competition. And Brian Hailing and Mary Hailing who took home awards from the Athletic Banquet. Graduates Then there are the graduates. Perhaps they are a little sad to be turning the pages on this chapter of their lives, but what lies ahead for each of them will be an adventure far greater than any summer vacation could be! There are nine graduates from Seminary this year. They are Cody Carr, Brian Hailing, Scott Hansen, Mary Hailing, Harper Johnson, JoAnn Richards, Debra Sara, Mark and Debra Wyatt. Im sure you are all wondering what our graduates are planning in the year ahead and Ill try and let you know in next weeks column. Wal-lenti- Missionary Called Diane Hall is very proud and excited to let you all know that her son Brad has been called to the England London South Mission. He wont be leaving until the end of July so there will be plenty of time for goodbyes and well wishes. Although Brad is leaving, Diane has another new young man in her life . . .a grandson has made his appearance in the Hall family. Lincoln Randall Hall was born May 15, weighing in at a delightful 8 lbs! Brad and Diane traveled to Springville, Utah on Sunday to get acquainted with the new little one and to congratulate proud parents Randy and Lloya. Lincoln was preceeded by a sister two years ago. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Frey of Minnesota. Cemetery Sprinklers I guess you are all wondering what ever happened with that new sprinkling system for the cemetery. The controled irrigation company of Ogden had planned to start work in March but were delayed till April and then . . .they were all set to start last Monday but the rain caused yet another delay. The work has been postponed until after more Memorial Day. Many improvements are planned for our lovely cemetery like leveling and planting grass and trees. Also, the town has some recreation funds which they would like to use toward some new play equipment by the school. Suggestions and ideas would be treatly appreciated. Nows the time to speak up on what you would like to see up there. This just in concerning new offices attained by our young people; The Palace Playhouse Thespians have elected Chad Carr as their President, Lynn Larsen, Vice President, and Michael Alredas Activity Manager. Congratulations to you all! With all this rain, I havent really been in the right frame of mind to think of tips for conserving water . . .but please dont follow my bad example. We still need to conserve as much as possible. Dont be misled into a false sense of security. Theres still a drought and we all need to help. I know many of you have special plans for the Memorial Day weekend. Do call me on Monday evening and let me know what you did.
