DESERVING OF HIGH HONORS Doctor Wsgner of ths Darmstadt (Ger-many) Bxpsrlment Station Hss Dsno Much for Agriculture. Fifty years ago Dr. Paul Wagner be-came director of the experiment sta-tion at Darmstadt, which had just been founded, and has since won for this Institution a world renown, through his Investigations on plant foods. Doctor Wagcer certainly de-serves to receive great commendation for having, with the help of his own method of pot experiments, substan-tially extended, and firmly established the foundation for the use of commer-cial fertilizers. He was the first to recognize and correctly estimate the fertilizing ef-fect of the Thomas phosphate or basic slag. By a steady Improvement in the methods of fertilizer experiments In the field, he succeeded In making of these field experiments a practical means of exact Investigation. Doctor Wagner, furthermore, has clearly shown the results of his In-vestigations In the vegetation house, field and laboratory, to the practical farmer, either in articles which are easily understood, or in Inspiring lec-tures; and In this way he has contrib-uted In an enormous degree toward the proper use of commercial fertilizers In agriculture. Here In the United States many of Doctor Wagner's articles are known, having been translated or summarized by numerous writers, to the great ad-vantage of American agriculture. That Fetched Hsr. The Boston girl was very pretty, but evidently not much In favor of being petted by comparative strangers. The young man was making fair progress, however. It was evident that she liked him. v Finally he asked for a kiss. She considered this Judicially. "And why should I give you a kiss?" she demanded. "I presume I can furnish no ade-quate reasons," he replied. "Your mo-tives must be altruistic." That landed her. Put and Take. Eleanor, at three, was very fond of her chewing gum, yet promptly obeyed when one day her mother told her to put It In the coal scuttle because din-ner was ready. However, she was soon chewing again, so mother ex-claimed: "Why, Eleanor, I thonght your gum was in the coal scuttle P And baby sweetly lisped, "It wath, but now 1th over here where me lsl" Two Ways of Looking at It "Did you know you were behind In your board?" said the landlady. "No, I didn't," said Poorpay. "Well you are. You owe roe for a month." "Oh, I know that, but I considered that I was Just that much ahead." Boston Evening Transcript. A girl doesn't really enjoy reading a poem to a man unless he Is holding her hnnd. Maybe Flying Too High. Desiring a position as kindergarten teacher, a pretty young miss went to a member of the school board In her city and told him of her modest ambition. He listened to the request In a father-ly way and no doubt considered that It was up to him to put a few general questions. So be asked: "What are your views on transcendentalism?" The girl hesitated for a while and then faltered : "Maybe I hadn't better try as high ns klndergorten work." Viewpoint of Optimist. "I tell you what," said the fat plumber, "you gotta hand It to old man Olutcher for being an optimist." "What is he an optimist about T asked the thin carpenter. "I thought he was in Jail" "So he is. So be Is." --Well "And the other day he was sen-tenced." "And be Is still an optlmlstr "Yes. I was In to see him just after he had been sentenced to ninety-nin- e years." "Gee I" "And he was happy as a cricket" "What was he happy about?" "Oh," he said. "It might have been life." Youngstown Telegram. Proof Positive. The Journeyman barbers doped out a tonic for bald heads, rented a small store, fixed up a nice window trim and arranged some placards that were not without appeal. When laymen wersi not around they Indulged In more or less discussion about their preparation. Thus In the midst of a quiet afternoon one of the partners was moved to speech. "John, I've been thinking." "What about, said ths other, surprised. "Does our hair restorer really da the work?" asked the first s "It must," declared John easily. "Why!" "Nobody ever comes back for a seo ond bottle," Nitrate Deposits In Sahara? The nitrates of Chile are the larg-est known to exist, and are one of the greatest sources of that country's prosperity. Their exhaustion would mean disaster to Chile and a great loss to the world. But It lias been suggested that Africa might compete with Chile, If not take the place of that country, In this Industry. Ex-perts are said to be convinced that nitrate deposits even more exten-sive than those of South America ex-ist all over the western part of the Sahara. It would cost more to get the product to the coast than It costs In Chile, but it is averred that this extra expense of transportation would only counter-balanc- e the high export duty Imposed on Chilean nitrates. Wash-ington Star. Listening to Conscience, We are bound not only to follow our conscience, but to have a right con-science to follow ; and to follow It, not as one follows the beast he drives, but as the soldier follows his commander. Rev. Augustus 1L Strong, D.D. Avoid those who are always borrow-ing money and those who have none to lend. Put your energy into achievement today rather than Into regrets tomor-row. It Is within the power of the least of us to be polite, straight from the heart Money talks in any old language and never falls to make Itself under-stood.
