Show sports for the past seven years, the writer has never seen such an exhibition exhi-bition of nerve and determination. Coach Baird of the Granite team said: "If the Granite team had the fight and pep that the Bingham Canyon Can-yon boys have, we would beat any team in the world." . Garth Jones, at left Tackle, surprised sur-prised even his most ardent admirers. admir-ers. Garth has a lot to learn, but the essential in being willing to learn, and having the backbone to tear in should make him a humdinger before the season ends. "Yuk" Dahlstrom at left end also did his share and made several nice completions of forward passes. Coach Tommy McMullin declared founded with the showing made by after the game that he was dumb-his dumb-his boys. 100 to 0 wouldn't have surprised sur-prised the coach ,it is said. Partial equipment has been purchased purch-ased for the lads but they are still without the football pants. And they played the entire game without football foot-ball shoes on a grass covered field. After following the writing of FUST EXHIBITION " WON PITE Bingham Canyon High School Foot-Ball Foot-Ball Lads Lose First Game 13 to 0 in Great Tussle. Granite's football warriors took a 13 to 0 practice game from the lling-ham lling-ham Canyon High School team on Thursday afternoon of last week on the Granite gridiron, it being the first game the local school has played the past ten years. Great credit must be given the Blue and White lads for their wonderful showing against the Farmers, who have been playing the game for these many years, while on McMullin's team were at least seven men who-had who-had never had on a football suit' before. be-fore. Granite scored its first touchdown in the first quarter, when Johanson intercepted a forward pass, which combined with line plunges sent Hansen Han-sen over the line. The second and last score of the game came in the third quarter, after Bingham Canyon had kicked off, following the half. Two completed forward passes netted net-ted the enemy forty yards, which were followed by some terrific line plunges, Howe carrying the oval over the line on a fake pass formation. The local lads fought to the last ditch, and several times during the last period were within striking distance, dis-tance, but the necessary punch was missing. FROM THE SIDELINES You can talk about the real football foot-ball teams that represent the various schools of the state, but in Bingham Canyon, Coach McMullin has the gamest and hardest fighting kids who ever donned a uniform. After practicing for only two weeks, with fellows who, heretofore had never played a game in their life, and with some on the lineup who had never as much as witnessed a game, McMullin's lads stopped the very best Granite had to offer. The persons who stated that Bingham Bing-ham Canyon would never have anything any-thing . but a good basketball team, should see the football lads at work. ' One more season with . the same amount of improvement will make the local team a contender with any team in the state, bar none. When a bunch of green kids can stop a team like Granite, what will they do when they develop? This fellow Wilson at Fullback is a whole team in himself. He hits the line hard, passes well, punts as good as the average high school lad, and is a bear on defensive play. Wilson Wil-son had one year of football at Oakley, Idaho. In Eddie O'Neal, the team has a right half, who isn't afraid of anything, any-thing, and although he was not called upon to do much in the Granite game, enough was shown by this stocky lad to warrant many things in the future. This is Eddie's first year in a football foot-ball suit. Riley Patten, the other half, hits the line with the speed of a locomotive. He rips through, and can always be depended upon for his share of the yardage. Riley has had one year of football training. Bob O'Neal at quarter showed considerable con-siderable prowess at directing the team, and proved to be a quick thinker, think-er, which should make itself manifest when the team is better equipped to follow the signals. Bob has also had one year of football under a coach. Lyonal Brady, the elongated basketball bas-ketball player is playing at right end. flaying the first game of his career, Brady did exceptionally well, and made several brilliant catches of forward for-ward passes. Watch out for Brady. "Bunny" Contratto, at right tackle, managed to get through the line several sev-eral times, and when he did, his man went down in his tracks. Bunny should develop into one of the best tackles in this section. Fearnley Baker, playing his first' football game, was stationed at right guard, and the opposition had considerable consid-erable trouble getting past this lad. Baker has the right idea, and practice should make him a great linesman. "Mickey" Culleton, handling a football foot-ball for the first time player! a great game at center, passing with accur-ncy, accur-ncy, and after a few games sfr)ij!,d maUe a great defensive player. A husky lad, Slotti plays left guard, and although nAv at the position, showed enough to warrant him a place on the team. j |
