Its been said that a high percentage of a persons character traits are formed before he or she enters school. That should give parents some idea of the responsibility they have in teaching their children well. To many times, parents are oblivious to the presence of their children. Patriotism and the individual citizen have been lost in the shadows of the party standards. Factions and special interest control political parties. Some even believe them to be conspiracies to seize power. In any case, y Americas system has brought us to where we are, y its that system for 44 of the except really been a last 46 years. All the federal bureaus, regulations, welfare systems, corruption, uncontrolled spending, has brought about huge deficits, exorbitant taxes, printing of too much money, and an annual inflation rate of 13.5 percent and counting. Putting the Democratic Party back into power would be the same as all Americans hitting themselves in the head because it felt so darn good when they quit. I believe even the democrats are waking up to that fact. two-part- one-part- Neither major party has any statutory or constitutional authority supporting it, but to hear the respective parties talk, you would think them part of the Constitution. Truth is, our Founding Fathers, many of them including George Washington, opposed the political party system as unnecessary, unwise, and poorly representative of the people. President Washington even predicted that the party system would become a menace to the nation and the people. Dont you think he was right? How many know that the Communist Party in the Soviet Union only represents 4 percent of the Russian people? In America we have 160 million voters while only 55 million y vote. No wonder we have a system. When you consider that one in five people work directly or indirectly for the government, the 20 percent of the national work force that is organized labor, and all that are on welfare, thats a large protective socialized vote that is hard to beat and has y maintained our system. Yet, we do not want socialism in America, but it seems to be out voting the America that favors free enterprise, and opposes the monopolies and cartels that have become the special iny terest which also backs our system and has for to recruit millions needs America half Free a century. nearly more voters, independent voters, a new outside constituency free from factions. one-part- one-part- one-part- America cannot afford the continued retrogression in the actions and quality of our public officials who serve the party and other special interest rather than the people. Our representation in Washington has become more interested in graft and coruption as the recent FBI sting investigation is bringing out. What a sad commentary for America to realize, that as much as 60 percent of our Congress is under the control of special interest, and therefore of questionable character. Its no wonder the Soviets are making a fool out of America with this kind of leadership in Washington. Once again the Americans must ask themselves, who continues to put this kind of leadership into office? The factions and special interest that control the parties as well as the government, thats who selects the candidates for you to put into office. All you can do now is vote the candidate that impresses you most, but vote for the candidate and the people, not the party. In the future perhaps more courageous men with leadership abilities will come forth as independent candidates and the American people must respond in kind and support them until all candidates are absolved from the obligation and consequences of the party special interest. United assemblies of individual peoples drawn together as a single voice in neighborhoods, townships, and communities, are to liberty, what the educational system is to science. The maintenance to sustain freedom comes from the courage of free individual and independent people. A nation may establish what it calls a free government and society, but without the spirit of free, independent individuals, it cannot have or possess the spirit of liberty. Hopefully America is beginning to wake up to this fact and now understands why their government is so poorly representative of the people and so highly representative of special interest. So a government of, by, and for the people has become a government of, by, and for the few and that is oppression, and oppression is tyranny. Never relinquish your individual civic and political responsibilities to any party, organization, or anything, or you will be doing so at the peril of this great nation and yourself. George Washington said, If we mean to support the liberty and independence which have cost us so much blood and treasure to establish, we must drive far away the demon of party spirit and local reproach. U.S. citizens cannot be independent, if they remain dependent on parties and political organizations to do for them what they never shall. The moral progression of people can hardly begin until they are really free and independent. Most of the world seems to hate Americans, but the world has never met our people. It only knows that small percentage picked by the parties and special interest. American people by the same token dont know the Russian people either. We only know that four percent of their ruling party. In Russia they rule with a gun. In America they are ruling by controlling your pocketbook. In either case, government is running the lives of both peoples. Liberty and freedom can only be sustained by individual responsibility. Its a hard lesson to learn, but the journey of decisions effecting individual freedom and human rights must be taken by you alone. To rely on others is to bring heartbreak and sorrow. Now we see more clearly the result that government by the party has brought upon America. America must bring to an end an election process whereby political parties and special interest can use the peoples voting system in their best interest. This may be done by the people voting for independents, or for the candidate of their choice. Repeal of the Seventeenth Amendment, allowing state legislatures to appoint once again U.S. Senators to Congress might better protect statess rights and giving our U.S. Senators a boss for a change. The recall system must be made workable and effective and then our Congressional representatives will have a boss too the people. The Vice President should be elected to office, not or running mate to the President. made into a yes-maAmerica must know by now that the people do not emerge to take office in this chaotic and circus atmosphere that has been created to deceive the American people at election time. Yes, the Party System has become demon and the menace our forebears warned us about. Whatever might have been thought to be reform obviously went too far and resulted in todays irresponsibile representative government. In 1980, vote for the candidate of your choice. Vote independent! Vote for the people, and not the party. n, best-qualifi- subject, KUTV news executive producer Mike Youngren and attorney Virginius Dabney confronted Davis County officials with the KUTV position that the hearing was public. According to Utah statutes, if a meeting is challenged legally and is judged by a court to be in violation of the Open Meetings Act, all transactions during that assembly are void. After some discussion, Davis County authorities reluctantly decided not to force the issue and rejected suggestions that KUTV be held in contempt or that its reporters and photographers be jailed. The hearing was moved to a larger room and began about an hour late, with television cameras present to record the proceedings. To compare Sonia Johnson with Emma Smith is ludicrous to say the least. Perhaps the pressures Emma Smith had been under helps one to understand her decision to stay as she was aware the persecution of the Mormons would continue. Another reason was her never truly accepting polygamy and she knew the saints would still live that. She had already buried four children who died in infancy. She had been disinherited by her family. Persecuted and forced to flee from several homes in several different states, her husband imprisoned for long periods and finally brutally murdered. Seems to me her decision to live out the of life in peace would have been an easy one to make under those circumstances. Her bitterness toward Brigham Young was not reason for excommunication neither was keeping Josephs papers. Emma did not go around the country publicly undermining Brigham Young even though there were many disagreements and she didnt try to remain a member in a church she had grown disinchanted with. She rather quietly lived out her life in seclusion, taking care of and loving Josephs mother, Lucy, the rest of her life. I wouldnt call Emma rebellious after realizing her desire for peace. What pressure has Sonia been under other than wanting to be important? Its obvious her life as a wife and mother were not as fulfilling as some of us find it to be. Sonia has gone all over the nation declaring loudly her disagreements with the leaders (brethren) of the church. Despite the fact she claims her talks are political rather than religious. I have one in my possession presented at the American Psychological Assoc, meeting in N.Y. City 1 Sept. 1979 that is strictly stating her contempt for the brethren. One she gave in : Provo is in the same vein. It is obvious her utter contempt for men. It puzzles me why Sonia wants to be a member of the Church when she obviously doesnt sustain its leaders. Her only reason has been, Its all Ive ever known, and Im a Mormon Without a testimony she will never be able to accept the precepts we hold dear. Most of us know who Sonia has chosen to serve discontent and disdain of our leaders will continue. By their fruits ye shall know them. Peace is what Emma sought Sonia seems to need the noteriety of stirring of dissent and down to my toenails. (1 challenge her on this one). Never has her reason been that she has a testimony of the churchs truthfulness, contention. And as to Mrs. Petereits comment that the rich and powerful Mormon patriarchs apparently feel so picked on that no discipline short of her will excommunication satisfy them. Im sure Pres. Kimball doesnt feel any more threatened than did Brigham Young but open rebellion is totally different than derisions made under stress and circumstances such as Emma did. and Marie Marshall figure for white teenagers is 14 percent unemployment.' All these figures are important, because there is a great body of opinion that there is a direct relationship between raising the federally .mandated minimum wage and the number of people out of work. The higher the minimum wage, and the more unrelated it is to actual productivity, it is argued, the more scarce jobs become especially for those (like young people) whose basic academic and job skills are lacking. FROMIEERGFOUNDONHI EXCUSE ME JUDGE, IM AN ORPHAN By Edwin Feulner Youre all familiar. Im sure, with the story of the young man who is convicted of killing his parents and then pleads with the judge and jury to be lenient with him because hes an orphan. Im reminded of this by the announcement from the White House that the Administration plans to beef up the various federal aid programs aimed at youth unemployment. The proposal, which would add an estimated $2 billion to the $4 billion we already are spending on teenage job programs, was unveiled early this year, amid considerable hoopla. Ironically, it came just ten days after the federal minimum wage went up again, to $3.10 an hour. Another hike to $3.35 is slated for January 1 , 1981 a 45 percent increase in four years. Current Labor Department figures show that there are some 1 .5 million young people out of work. Of these, about 1.2 million are white, and approximately 332,000 black. The jobless rate for black youths stands at 33 percent, which means one out of every three youngsters who is supposedly looking for work cant find a job. The comparable Look at it this way. If youre an employer, you have certain expenses. One of them is for help. If your mythical budget allows $800 a day for help, you could afford to hire 100 people at $1 an hour. If the minimum wage is boosted by the government to $1 . 10 an hour next Monday, you are forced into having to choose between spending $880 a day for help, or spending the same amount as before but hiring 10 fewer people. Because most businessmen can not afford the luxury of adding 10 percent to their payroll budget without the guarantee that revenues will increase enough to offset the increase, every hike in the minimum wage results in fewer or what the economists have termed disemployjobs ment. Walter Williams, the brilliant black economist from Temple University, has argued for years that we are creating an entire class of unemployable people by hiking the minimum wage to levels higher than the market supports. He is joined by many, many others white and black. Prof. E. G. West of Canada, who has taught at the University of Chicago, and the University of California at Berkeley, notes in the current issue of Policy Review that teenagers are not the only ones displaced by higher minimum wages but argues that it seems to be an unstated public policy that its okay to toss people out of work this way because it will coax individuals into formal government-provide- d training establishments that will prepare them for a better lifetime income. Which brings us back to the Administrations new $2 billion boondoggle which is little more than a band-ai- d approach to a problem the government itself has created. Kennedy Lets shed some light on electricity bills! Whos paying what and why? Misconceptions can cloud public thinking as states consider electric rates. Lets look clearly at some of the facts: Misconception No. 1: Homeowners are subsidizing industrial electricity use. Fact: Residential electricity consumers are not paying more for electricity so industrial consumers can get a bargain rate. In fact, in most cases, its the other way around. Studies show that power companies earn a higher return rate on invested capital from industrial customers than from residential ones. If industrial customers didnt provide such good revenues for utilities, the utilities would have to get the revenues from homeowners. Misconception No. 2: Industry gets bargain or promotional electric rates. Fact: Rates are based on the cost of providing service to each class of consumer industrial, commercial, residential. Large users often pay lower unit prices because it costs less to bring a kilowatt hour of electricity to a large user (such as a factory) than to a singlefamily home. Misconception No. 3: Penalizing industry would help people. Fact: If every customer paid the same for every kilowatt hour of electricity used industry would pay rates substantially higher NEWS OF PROGRESS More Miles From The Gallon If you want to slow down your fuel costs, step up your personal conservative program. The energy problem is really not a dream, and dealing with it requires clear thinking and decision not dictated by politics or emotion. Three principles can serve all consumers in this process: An adequate, reliable supply of electricity for everybody must be assured. We will have spot shortages of electricity if somebody stops the installation of adequate capacity. Fair share, cost-of-servi- prices are equitable for everybody. Tinkering with prices can only put off and probably make worse the necessary economic consequences. Regulation of electricity has to remain a state and local matter.
