Show Page 1 0 August 29. 979 1 Sporrsfacular Falcons should soar a bit hlghor in 79 Football riches have been much more lucrative in the 70s, over the 60s for the Clearfield High Falcons. A winning season for Coach Brent Hancock and his 1979 gathering will assure Clearfield of more winning seasons that not, in the past decade. As in all high school football camps early in the there is plenty of enthusiasm but probably just as .many question marks. Coach Hancock has a few of those question marks in the back of his mind, but with three workouts a day and an August 31st game rapidly approaching) his mind may be settling a bit more. "Its just going to be a wait and see situation," says, Hancock, "If we can stay healthy, well be competitive. We dont have any superstars but weve got kids that have a lot of quickness and toughness. Hancock and his staff would like nothing better than to end the season with a winning record. He is assisted by Ken Hicks, John pre-seas- flanker position and will give the Falcons some extra strength. Others that will help in Hancocks game plan include Jim Valentine, Shane Openshaw, Dave Valentine, Niel Stapley, and Roscoe Cunningham. Louis Cain has the split end spot and will be backed by Doug Bills, Robbie Jones, and Kevin LeRoy. Robert Hammer and Mark Carter will man the center position.. Offensive guards include Glen Simpson, Kevin Neville, Robbie Collier, Brad Wilkes, Jose Arela, Danny Combe, and Doug Fesler. Tim Robbinett, Randy Bowden, Sean Moore, Chuck Andrews, Gerry Woodard, Eric Naylor, and Jeff Walker were Hancocks early selections for his offensive tackle positions. Defensive Outlook Gerry Woodard and Greg Riddler will hold down the defensive end positions while Randy Bowden and Sean Moore were early picks for defensive tackle positions. Randy Carter will play at nose guard. ' Jim Valentine and Mike Oawford will play strong safety positions. Tim Gooch, Louis Cain, Boarden, Robbie Jones, and Perez wil play comerback Simon slots.. Safeties include Brook Hicks, Manuel Perez, and Milt Hill. A number of players will see action at inside linebacker positions. They include Dean Vernon, Kevin Neville, G. Simpson, Dan Combe, Doug Fesler, Darren Bateman, Robbie Collier and Brad Wilkes. Flint, Craig Hansen, Bruce Bumingham, and Ray Meibos. Starting at quarterback for the Falcons will most likely be Brooks Hicks, a senior. Other signal callers include Milt Hill, Manuel Perez, Kevin Bitton, and James Prothero. At tailback, Clearfield will field Tim Gooch, Mike Crawford, a transfer from Arizona, Kelly Chapman, Ed Lemon and Roger Roberts. Dean Vernon has the inside track on the fullback spot. Vem White and Darren Bateman could also see action. At tight end, Clearfield will send out Greg Ridler and Kevin Tracey. Others include Dave Erickson, Gary Bensen, and Shane Hott. CLEARFIELD'S GREG BOARDEN, after a football Liters a rat no takers! Region One championship. The Lakers made their way into the state playoffs a year ago in dramatic fashion. It was an unforgettable victory over Cottonwood and a loss to disappointing Granger that had everyone 15-1- 2 thinking "Laker Power" was for real. Bonneville will open their preseason schedule under the lights. Their encounter will be with the Ogden Tigers in a 7:30 p.m. contest at Weber State College on August 31.. The following week the Lakers will play a night game again, this time in Brigham City against the Box Elder Bees. They will hit the road again for a practice game against Hillcrest the following week. The Region One battle for the title begins September 21 as the Lakers host Clearfield in a featured homecoming attraction. Junior, Cory Sylvester, appears to have Budges nod for the quarterback slot Hell be han- ding off to Region One All-Stpick (a year ago), Marvin Ellis. Ellis will play tailback and is backed by Mike Smith and Brent Cundick. ar Junior fullback, Lloyd Togsisala will also be in the offensive picture. ond Coach LaMar Hirschi are two reasons why Bonnavilla pected to be a favorite for the Region One title. LINEBACKER STEVE POTTS ex- Slots include Gilbert Ballingham and Bryan Turner. At this writing Budge was still uncertain who would see action on the offensive line but did say Dale Hale, senior, would play at one tackle slot. Gary Satterfield will see action at a guard position. Danny Call will get to call to play tight end while Dean DeLion and Dirk Sawley will catch the ball at wide receiver positions. On defense, Bonneville will go to Bill Noker and Alan Watson 200-pou- for tackles. Defensive end include Lanny candidate? Nelson, Neil Glubber, and Norman Hainey. Outside linebackers include Mike Spencer and Rich Black- burn, both seniors. Inside linebackers may include Mike Rich, Steve Thomas, Scott Potts, and TOd RickerL Several are fighting for staring positions at defensive back. They include Ronnie Rich, Fred Gunderson, Dirk Sawley and Ellis Smith. Look for the Lakers to at top of the league standings in November or very close to it. Dan Slaugh, Steve Gardner, LaMar Hershey, Gary Alverson, Harold Miller, and Dick Michels will assist Budge. |
