Show I BEN LOMOND BEACON. way Hoopes has, the championship was deserving. Rick Tanner, Tony Craz, and DeVon Robinson got Weber off to a fast start, all winning their matches. The Braves were undefeated in duel meets as were the Warriors. A trophy for the title stood in the trophy case just outside in the hall as it awaited its owner. Mike Grotegoed and Brad Storey competed in some brutal rematches with Bountiful opponents, but. both came out losers. In the discussion with their team, both Hoopes and Coach James cautioned against getting on their back and allowing a pin. The Weber wrestlers must have taken heed, only two Weber wrestlers were stuck. Bruce Finch is Webers brightest hope in the middle weights and he gave his team four points in a romp over his opponent. Wrestling in matches that were as close as close can be, Stu Johnson, Howard Carpenter, Brad Howell, and Danny Eastman were all defeated. Eastman was leading 0 in his match, but rolled over and found himself on his back and was pinned. Marie Storey, despite suffering a minor concussion in his match, still came out victorious. The highly talented Warrior continued his undefeated record with the win. His points set up the impressive match between Cottrell and his opponent. Weber wrestlers have agreeably taken a back seat behind some other activities at Weber High this season, but took a big step to reverse that with the victory and the championship last by Keith Duncan The portrayal of victory and the agony of defeat, both were displayed in convinceable style last Thursday evening in Bountiful. Weber High mixed together some pre-mat- and earthpounding victories and spiced that with some painful defeats to emerge as the 1979 Region One Dud Meet Wrestling champions. The region honor is the first for any Weber High athletic team this season and the first one for any such Weber squad in the past few years. The ending was dramatic and almost predictable. Heavyweight Scott Cottrell, whose last match heroics against Skyview earlier this season won a match for Weber, was the only hope for the Warriors again. Down with Cottrells match remaining, the tireless Weber team found themselves in a do or did 23-2- y Feb. 1, 1979, Page 4 Warriors win 27-2-3 unforgetable - i 7-- 1 situation. Hearts stopped in the beginning of the first period when Cottrell got rolled over on his back and the heavier Brave wrestler pounded on top of him. Prior to the crucial match, Cottrell had suffered through a couple weeks of sickness. But somehow the dark-haire- d senior managed to roll over on one shoulder and eventually get out of the predicament. Down 1 and entering the final period, Cottrell was on top and had that advantage. Scott drove his man to the mat as the whistle blew, got the prelimary hold he wanted and worked cautiously, but timely in working his opponents shoulders to the mat. Cheerleaders screamed, coaches and players pleaded, parents and fans stood and cheered and Cottrell pinned. Weber had done it.
