Mountain Fuel and Mountain Bell warn of lawsuits requiring the cities to return revenue collected through taxes levied on utility bills. The utilities claim the tax discriminates against them. Mountain Fuels receipts have a tax added while fuel oil, coal, wood have not. The additional cost of the franchise tax could mean a decision to purchase phone equipment rather than lease from Mountain Bell. The one phone I replaced isnt a big deal, but a switch by a large business with a sophisticated system to another system that they dont have to pay a franchise tax on, could hurt the phone company.
