Yet women in 1979 have taken a giant step backward in the detection of the often-fatdisease. The reason for this set back is the increasing reluctance of many women al to undergo diagnostic mammograms or breast This is true despite the fact that nearly one woman in 13 will at some time in her life develop the disease. Beginning in 1975 when the news first surfaced about radiation-relatepossible deaths in Southern Utah, radiation treatments of all types have been given a bad reputation, says Dr. Charles R. Smart, LDS Hospital chief of surgery and world renowned breast cancer expert. Many people listening to these news reports have become frightened about and carry danger in one this prejudice with them into their doctors office. This fear of has resulted in a dramatic reduction in the number of mammograms being performed throughout Utah, Dr. Smart notes. It was the development of the mammogram that was perhaps the greatest step we look in the last 30 years in making an early diagnosis of breast cancer possible,- he says. But in the aftermath of the Southern Utah fallout only one mam- coverage, mogram is today being performed for every four or five ordered in 1975. This remarkable cure rate is possible because the tumor takes five to 10 years to grow into the size ef a detectable lump. But by that time nearly 0 percent of the women have already had the tumor spread from their breast to their underarm area. By then the best treatment we can recommend is complete removal of the diseased tissue, says Dr. Smart. For instance, the census is expected to show that the number of husbandless women who are heading families has soared nearly 50 percent since 1970, to more than eight questionnaire y g million. The traditional family household of mother, father, and one or more children now accounts for less than a third of the nations households. Thats the lowest percentage ever. s Both husband and wife are in about half of the 48 million husband-wif- e families in the United States. This is also a new high. We should take off those silly glasses weve been wearing, Harrison says, and sit down for some realistic negotiations with what should be recognized as a deadly serious enemy. Meanwhile, he warns, our myopia is interfering with the world balance of power. Because were not able to understand Soviet thought, were not able to see what theyre up to. The principal American weakness, says Harrison, is our failure to understand an enemy who operates from premises which we fail to take seriously. At the heart of things lies a peculiarly American scorn for ideas, which hinders us in our dealings with the Soviets. This is part and parcel of what could be termed our businesslike approach to our relations with the Soviet Union, an approach whose underlying premise is that we and our opponents are basically businessmen at heart and that we should get down to g as quickly as possible and not.be serious bothered by such nonsense as ideology. Nowhere is this more true than in the Soviet Union, where the leadership regards all forms of thought deviating from its own interpretation of Marxism-Leninisboth internal and external as illegitimate. To the Soviets, says Harrison, detente opens new doors in the struggle against capitalism through increased comd munications and Soviet authority around the globe. In other words, the Russians know that the implicit good will of detente makes the U.S.S.R. look good, increasing the chances its propagandizing will be listened 'irtess of the surrounding ss m new-foun- to.
