Show Patriotic SALUTETHE U.JL FLAG Grammar School Gives a Demonstration Well Worth While FOURTH GRADE PRESENTS A BEAUTIFUL SILK FLAG TO THE GRAMMAR SCHOOL There was a patriotic demonstration demonstra-tion by the pupils of the grammar school yesterday for a half hour before be-fore noon. It was a demonstration well worthy of emulation by every school in the land. The occasion was the presentation by the pupils of the fourth grade to the grammar school of a beautiful silk flag. This handsome copy of Old Glory was purchased pur-chased with money received from the sale of flag buttons by the fourth graders after they had already sold enough to purchase a smaller silk flag mounted on a handsome staff for their own room. The second grade was the first to purchase a room flag and soon each room of the grammar school is to have one. Preceding the flag raising the school sang "America," and Evelyn Williams of the fifth grade recited "Hats Off, the Flag Is Passing By." Then the school sang "O Columbia the Gem of the Ocean." To Master Howard Blanpied was given the honor of presenting the flag for his room-mates. County Superintendent of Schools Edgar H. White, in a few words, accepted the flag for the school. The flag was then pulled to the top of the high staff on the grammar school building while the pupils standing in orderly military line sang with enthusiasm and good volume "The Star Spangled Banner." While the flag floated in brilliant ripples from its lofty staff the pupils and teachers, led by Mrs. Johnstone, teacher of the fourth grade, gave the following patriotic salute to Old Glory: "I pledge allegiance to my flag and to the country for which it stands, indivisible in liberty and justice for all." The ceremony of the flag raising was witnessed by Supt. Whitev State Supt. of Primary Work Mrs. Sarah Holllster, and a number of citizens. |
