A choir was needed and, as the tabernacle choir of the place did. not know Latin, it was thought that the singing of the Kyrie Eleison, Gloria a nd Credo could not be carried out. The leader of the choir asked for Catholic music and, being given Peters Mass, in two weeks his choir knew the Mass and could sing it in Latin. On the third Sunday of May High Mass was sung in the tabernacle. Before the services Father Scanlan explained the meaning of the vestments used at Mass and at the Gospel p reached an eloquent sermon from the text, True adorers of God adore Him in spirit and truth. He was very careful to give no offense and to resDect the beliefs of his hearers, nearly all of whom were Mormons. He won for himself the esteem and good will of all. When Father Scanlan returned from Silver Reef to Salt Lake, a deputation from the citizens waited upon him and presented him with a gold watch and chain and delivered an address congratulating him on the success of his administration and expressing their admiration for him as a priest and citizen. or At about the same time his Archbishop co nferred upon him the title of Vicar-ForanRural Dean. The indefatigable. priest now en tered upon a visitation of his vast parish. On horseback or on foot he visited Provo, Ophir, Stockton, Alta, Castle Gate, Park City and Bingham, and, wherever there was prospect o f establishing a parish, he erected a church. On Christmas Eve of 1877 the first solem n High Mass celebrated in Utah was sung at midnight. Father Scanlan was Celebrant, the Reverend J. L. Buholzer was Deacon and the Fanrie rs Mass was sung and a sermon in defense of Reverend Dennis Kiely Christianity was delivered.
