I I Students can pick mascot, colors for new Mgh school Ashleigh Restad SHS STAFF WRITER Finally, a solution to overcrowded classrooms, high student-to-teacher ratios ra-tios and clutter of portable biiildings scattered across campuses in Nebo School District has arrived. In the fall of 2008, Salem Hjlls High School is scheduled sched-uled to open as the first of two new schools on the so'uth end of Utah County. Maple Mountain High School, scheduled to open in the fall of 2009, is the other school. With two new schools come two more mascots. Fortunately, students, patrons pa-trons and alumni of Nebo School District have the opportunity op-portunity to propose their choice of mascot and school colors for these two schools. Proposal forms are available avail-able in the Springville High main office or at www.nebo.edu. Citizens may submit a proposal for each school, indicating their suggested school colors col-ors and mascot. Each proposal pro-posal must include a ratio Devils defeat Emery 62-60 in close one Shelby Smith SHS STAFF WRITER The Red Devil Boys' Basketball Bas-ketball Team boarded the buses on Friday, Jan. 7, to begin be-gin their two and a half hour journey to Emery High school. The roads were snow-packed and slow-moving, but the boys persevered. The sophomore Red Devils played first with the final score Springville High School, 38, and Emery High School, 51. Easton Folster vouched for the entire sophomore team when saying, "We didn't perform per-form too well after the long bus ride and away games are always hard without all the fans cheering you on." The Varsity Red Devils also joined the fight at Emery High school, leaving with a win and score of Springville, 62, Emery, 60. This was a really close game, and both teams played their best. BJ Smith said, "The game was intense, and Emery played well. Regions are coming up, so we need support sup-port from all our fans." On Tuesday, Jan. 8, a special spe-cial Varsity only game will be held at Springville High School at 7:30 p.m. The Red Devils will play Pleasant Grove High School, and all proceeds will help pay for state. This also means no student stu-dent discounts. Dr. Crowe Kim Clark SHS STAFF WRITER Dr. Crowe, a BYU Professor Profes-sor and renowned author, recently visited some of the sophomore English classes at Springville High School. Crowe has had two of his books published, "Mississippi "Missis-sippi Trial 1955," a fictional thriller, and "Getting Away with Murder: The True Story Sto-ry of the Emmett Till Case," a non-fictional story of an actual trial. When visiting the students, stu-dents, Crowe talked about his books. He went into detail de-tail about the trial of Emmett Em-mett Till and shared how he researched the case. He told the students of the extensive ex-tensive research that was required in order to make the stories as truthful as possible. SHS English teacher Miss Haubert arranged the event, and her class was one of the classes that had the opportunity to listen to Dr. Crowe. When asked how the students responded respond-ed to Crowe, Haubert said, "He really knew how to relate re-late to the students and make them feel comfortable." comfort-able." Along with telling the students about his books, Crowe also told of the steps involved in writing a story. He taught them about writing writ-ing processes, the many necessary revisions, and the editing process. Crowe had a question and answer session after giving his presentation. The students stu-dents were very intrigued with what he had to say and had many questions. . "This was an excellent experience for the students to have such close contact with an author who is so well known," Haubert said. We applaud their wins and mourn their losses, but through it all, some of the players are not only working hard on the playing field, but in the classroom as well. To recognize these academically acade-mically hard-working athletes, ath-letes, the state honors ten individuals in-dividuals with the Academic All-State award. In order to be eligible for the award, the student must be a starter on a varsity sports team and hold a 3.75 overall grade-point-average.
