Show dign ahk hogg is PHONE A location tor for an all year all utah road eastward from zion national park to mount carmel that will cut the distance between the park and bryce canyon from the present miles to 87 miles was discovered by B J pinch finch district engineer tor for the united states bureau of public roads and howard 0 means chief engineer of the state road commission they returned yesterday from an extended southern utah trip we have investigated the propos ed location sufficiently said mr finch yesterday to convince us that it la is the solution of the hitherto un solved problem of a practicable and a practical connection between the zion national park highway and the grand canyon highway the route as a possible location tor for an automobile highway may be said to have been discovered by the tac engineers in the southeast cornel corner of the park it traverses a region hith erto arto but little known to even the in habitants of either the virgin river valley or of long valley the one exception whom the engineers found was john winder a rancher and pi aneer of the uplands on the east rim of zion national park mr winder rendered valuable assistance in del ter mining the feasibility of the pro posed route route Is difficult so rough and difficult is part of the territory through which the proposed location passes that even the maps of that region are misleading A map of zion national park prepared by the park service from the best anfor mation available shows pine creek a tributary which joins the deap or the main stream of the park proper near the registry station at the park entrance as having its in in the uplands around the east temple of the virgin it shows showe clear creek which enters the park from the east as a tributary of the rio virgin paralleling the deap As a matter of fact the clear creek above the gorge it has cut in the hills is the pine creek of the park floor and it is along the canyon eroded by this small tributary of the that the proposed lo 10 cation tor for a new state and possible possibly federal highway runs As the traveler enters the park and is halted at the registry station in accordance with the rules of the park service he notices a deep gorge to the right apparently closed by ar ara arched rock which Is often pointed out to the tourist the proposed road would follow this gorge and would pass through the same rock which makes the big arch a short distance to the north A tunnel of considerable length but otherwise pro pre benting no great engineering problem would here it is thought be feces sary thence the road climbs up the canyon tor for possibly three or foul more miles till about a mile outride the east boundary of the park it reaches a mesa across which it I 1 Is s a d matter of easy construction to mount carmel A ranch road already con strutted ted here furnishes the route id to connect with the present state high way leading from kanab to mount carmel from the registration sta tion in the park to this junction the total distance Is twenty five miles cuts distance in two tiso concerning possibilities of the pro posed location mr means said yester day the zion national park mount carmel route connects the three scenic points of greatest present in terest in utah cedar breaks zion park and bryce with a mileage of as against miles by way of hurricane and kanab and mile through rockville and the proposed cutoff to the big plains country this connection will make possie ble bl a continuous continuo continuous up trip and will elim binate returning by any part of the road already traversed it will eliminate the necessity oil 09 construction of a 40 bridge across the virgin river at rockville and also of forty five miles of road ID in arizona which would be necessary tor for the rockville connection with the hurricane kanab route it will provide an all utah con coni lection between the zion national park highway or th the e arrowhead trail and the grand canyon high wa over a summit feet in ele above sea level this Is a lower summit than that over either of the present connections of these two routes in utah on the sevier coye cove port fort road and on the Para gooM ah orton road viewed from an economic stand point it connects mount carmel and kanab with the railroad at cedar over an all year route fifteen mile I 1 shorter than the present distance ol 01 these points from the railroad at marsdale Mars mar vale the marysvale Marys vale mount carmel route passes over over a summit feet in elevation which Is blocked by snow about four each year the new route also provides road facilities to several thousand acres ol 01 excellent dry farming and irrigated land lying along the proposed route snow troubles Tiou bles eliminated the visitors saw dry farm corr growing on a ranch west of mount carmel and mr winder was harvest harves tj ing a crop of gooseberries which con si dering the remoteness of his ranch is of startling proportions the proposed route continued mr air means is twenty five miles long with ten miles of construction where the maximum grade will be q per cent and fifteen miles where the maximum grade will be only 3 per it crosses a summit of feet which is so located that snow troubles are practically nine miles of the road Is within the boundary of washington county and extending across the lower end ol 01 zion national park the remaining sixteen miles are in kane rane county V only six miles of the twenty five liver present any difficult construction problems and even these are simi similar lart to those which have been met in oth er projects within this state the investigation was carried through with the assistance of walter I 1 i superintend ten ant of zion national park and alfred russell park ranger and of the county commis of kane hane county very kaluf v able assistance also was rend rendered ereo by john winder of springdale whose thorough thor pugh knowledge of the country made it possible to find so feasible a route salt lake tribune |
