day observance held in y the untied united states occurred when governors of seventeen states met within the famous zion mount blount carmel carimer highway tunnel in southern utah to participate in its ita formal dedication to public usa use although it la Is only 20 26 miles long this highway Is the greatest project broje c t of 4 its kind ever undertaken by ahe U 8 national park service fad and bureau of public roads its ita c cost t was close to two million dollars 11 0 and it incorporates two iwo tunnels one feet long and the other more than 00 feet long la in its short length dedication ceremonies were hold held within the longest of the tunnels whose outer wall la Is pierced with six gallert galleries es through which ventilation ti and sunlight are admitted gallery gairy 1 the larg largest eit of them all was the scene of the formal bedl dedication lon within this gallery the stand stana from which vailoa various governors national park service and union pacific portal of the tunnel Jo with the governors arnore party in in dedication of the road and observance of indea independence e n day they found the tunnel portal and gallery galiy decked with flags and bunting ano an chairs placed for their comfort within a rock hewn work on the highway has been in progress for the past three ye years arsand and its construct construction loa embodied some unusual and remarkable engineering feats its purpose purpose Is to t shorten the distance between three national parks zion where ea tho the highway begins and grand canyon and bryce canyon national parks paries to the south and northeast respectively beginning near the park ranger station at at the entrance to zion national park the road ascends in adiong n long series of gently rising switchbacks switch backs until it reaches the sheer face of one of the crimson cliffs of zion national park here the longer of the two tunnels begins and penetrates this dirt cliff tor for a distance of more thalia than a mile theroan the road finally emerges nt at the he top of the plateau from which zion canyon has been etched bons eons of time by one small river it accomplishes ats ts purpose of shortening the distances between thin the three most colorful of all of the twenty two national parks parka in ahe the united states gov GOT dern dedicates zion i mount blount carniel carmel highway difference of opinion among them in regard garito to the national parks these areas of outstanding beauty are fh chiefly lefly valuable for their recreational uses me we do not need them not nor wint want them as playgrounds for our own people alone we are ara happy that they have been set aside for the enjoyment of all who may be attracted by their charm they are ara the show places of our nation in which every american holds holda a share of ownership while zion national park and bryce bracq canyon happen to be situated within the boundaries of the state of utah yet we wa are proud to share our ownership of these ma natural tural marvels with all the rest of our fellow Anie americans ricans and we say to them come out and inspect your property you will be ba proud of it and your pride of delicately carved by nature that stone resembles lace statues monuments cathedrals the eye can pick them out their beauty lingers long in the memory as a masterpiece ot of the giver diver ot of nil all good and perfect gatte drive arite GO 60 miles through the incomparable kalbak forest the largest est tract ot of virgin timber in the united states seeing herds of deer as you pass along proceed to bright angel point or cape royal on the colorado AN it the majesty of that sublime spectacle does not impress rou you must indeed be impervious to the beauties of nature |
