''Seeing7' the old year out and the new year in probably saved the life of Mrs John AYorswick, 14 S South Fifth East street, at 12:25 o'clock this morn inc. I A 32.20-caliber rifle bullet pierced the roof of the house, ripped a hole in the ceiling and lodged in a pillow of a couch where Mrs. Worswick sleeps. Had Mrs. "Worswick retired at her usual hour she would probably not be alive j now to tell the tale. ; Mrs. Worswick rang up police head- , quarters. It was the first, call made ; to the police station in this year of: grace. VM7. Patrolmen L. L. Larson! and t. M. Patten investigated. They I were unable to tell from what dire-ction the shot was fired, but they stated that ' it must have beeD at rather close range.' That, however, it was fired from a higher building, they are sure. The house where Mrs. Worswick lives is a one-story building. Shortly after midnight manv shots rang out signaling the dying of 1016 and the birth of 1917. The police believe that sufficient care was not exercised by many in the matter mat-ter of directing shots, but no accidents were reported. Mrs. Worswick therefore gains the distinction of being the first peivou in Salt Lake in 1017 to have a narrow escape from death nr injury. |
