Show Senate debates alleged discrimination Bill states P.E. facilities should be closed during women's events, as during men's by Kent Johnson The ASSUSC Senate is considering a resolution to correct apparent discrimination against womens athletics. According to the resoultion, physical education facilities are available for open recreation during a majority" of womens athletic events, however, facilities are closed during "certain men's events. The resolution would recognize the equality of mens and womens athletic programs and their rights to compete before an audience. It calls for recreation facilities to be either closed or open during all athletic events. Senators Matt Christensen and Adrian Sampson voiced concerns about closing the Physical Education Building during sports events. Ive heard people wonder why it was closed in the first place, Christensen said. Sampson said he thinks students should have a choice of whether they would like to see the games or use the recreation facilities. The resolution will now be posted for review by the student body. It is expected to come before the Senate for a final vote next week. The Executive Council approved the charter for the Ski Club and rejected a charter application for the Resident Housing Association because it lacked a constitution and s. other Senate business., senators voted to post a bill to cover election costs. The Election Bill requests $600 to cover the cost of a dance, ballots, posters and a dinner for candidates. Senators also discussed funding next year for the rodeo team. Several senators said they are concerned about the way the tearp is currently In funded. Senate President Kevin Millecam said that 70 cents from each students activity fee goes to the rodeo team. That's a tough thing for us to swallow," Millecam said. "Everyone pays in and we try to benefit everyone with the fees. But last year that money went to a club with just four members." Millecam said that a student survey taken last year indicated that a majority of students, (51 percent) felt the rodeo team should not be funded by student fees. No action was taken on the issue. Work on laige ballroom progresses Work on the large ballroom in the Student is moving right along. Plans include refinishing the walls and the floor and also adding stained glass to several windows. The work on the walls is being done by SUSC Industrial Arts students, who each day add a little more to the work already done. It will be Center some time before all the improvements and additions are completed in the ballroom so in the meantime students may have to tolerate a little noise in the day or a little more dust at dances. SUSC President Gerald R. Sherratt accepted the donation last week from Robert Bradshaw on behalf of Bradshaw Chevrolet-BuicCedar City, and the United Mortgage Company of Las Vegas, Nev. k, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bradshaw, Mr. and Mrs. Gail Bradshaw and Mrs. Christy Bradshaw, owners of the automobile dealership and part owners of the Las Vegas are responsible for the firm, donation. Mrs. David Boyer, chairman of the mortgage company board of directors and Ted Nicothodes, president, represent United Mortgage Co. While the donors prefer not to disclose the amount of the gift, we can safely that it is a very significant one for the facility, Sherratt said.
