Immediately after publication Hank and Barbara received wide acclaim for their efforts. Leonard Randloph, Literature Program Director for the National' Endowment for the Arts, exclaimed it was "truly a fine beginning!" Paula Barta of the Western States Arts Foundation hearlded the Silver Vain as "a beautiful piece of work with first class writing." The Silver Vain was a labor of love and a product of many days of hard work and brainstorming by the editors. They stressed popularsuccess over financial success and strove to create a quality publication combining local talent with the work of nationally known writers. As Hank noted, "We wanted to blend the work of some heavyweights with previously unpublished writers. Publications of this sort meet with greater success when "knowns" and "unknowns" are mixed." He added, "It means that much more for an unknown writer to be published alongside a writer of the caliber of Sam Hamill or William Ransom . ' ' Material was selected for publication without regard for theme or style, although most of the work had a western orientation. The only criteria material had to meet for publication was simply that both of the editors liked it. Judging fromitheir overwhelming success.'no other criteria needed to be considered. Not content to rest on their laurels, Hank and Barbara are busy preparing their next issue for publication. They have been promised manuscripts by masterful story teller, Edward Abbey. Local writers are urged to submit material to be reviewed by the editors. The next issue will be out in September. Ride the Tram Glide to the top of scenic Hidden Peak.
