Show POPE LEO'S BIRTHDAY. Rome, March 2. The Pope this afternoon after-noon received in the throne room the j members of the Sacred College and the Roman prelates, who presented Hi3 Holiness with congratulations on the occasion of his birthday. The Pontiff's reply was read by Monsignor Miscit- atelli. After thanking the prelates f.r their wishes as to his health, the Pop dwelt on the divine mercy "whi.-h sometimes makes use of the weakest j to gu.de during many years Peter's I bark." He referred o the Holy Year I celebrations and the demonstrations in honor of Giorodano Bruno (the Italian philosopher), attributing the latter t. the work of satan. and concluded with expressing his keen desire that bloud would cease to flow in South Africa, "where two peoples, although brothers! are slaughtering one another," and hoped they would soon meet and eni- 1 I brace in the kiss of peace.
